I use DHT Tangle Free line conditioner that comes in a 2 oz bottle. Tried KVD on FC line but you must apply it a day in advance to have any affect. With Tangle Free for both mono and FC line, a few drops as needed directly on the spooled reel line eliminating the line springing off the spool. Tom PS, Reel Magic guns up lubricants.

Being from the left coast drop shot is a mainstay presentation on our clear rocky sparse cover lakes in SoCal. Type of cover determines what your tackle should be. I don’t cast a drop shot rig any further than 30’ usually more of a vertical presentation. If casting and dragging back I use the Slip shot rig. My drop shot rigs are nose hook, wacky hooked and weedless hook finesse worms between 4” to 6”. Medium/fast spinning with 2500 size reel and 7 lb Sniper FC line. Weight 3/32 to 1/4 oz drop shot weight. Nose and wacky hook Owner Mosquito size 1. Weedless Owner #5133 size 1/0 or 2/0 depending on worm diameter. Slip shot weedless same as drop shot hook, weight is Mojo type cylinder with Carolina keeper to adjust weight to hook length usually about 30”, 5 lb Max UG mono. Drop shot hook about 8” above the weight. Weight depends mostly on wind and depth mostly 1/8oz. You don’t need to put action into a drop shot slight movements work best. MF 7’ spinning is essential for SoCal lakes for finesse presentations like drop shot, Slip shot ( finesse C-rig) and 5” wacky rigged Senko’s and jerk baits. Your MHF casting outfit is a keeper for Texas rigged worms, C-rig, jigs, top water and frogs. The local ponds and park lakes get pounded daily tough fishing. Lots of beds with short fish could be Bluegills if the beds are dinner plate size. Refraction doesn’t distort the fish length distorts the width. Tom

Strike detection skills is something that has paid off for me and takes years to learn. Today we see the FFS Scopers fishing outside water using their sonar to find bass and detect strikes. I been doing this for decades by finding suspended bass by watching birds, looking for signs of baitfish activity and feeding bass. Total concentration is the key to strike detection, you are missing strikes by not paying attention to changes in your lure, line movements. Tom

Your best bet is local salt water Calico Bass in the Long Beach harbor and Federal breakwater areas. Nearest bass lake is El Dorado park lake. Legg lake maybe within your 1 hour drive window from Long Beach area. 2 hours opens up more choices. What tackle do you have? I suggest thinking about hiring a guide at Lake Casitas it’s a very good bass lake at this time. Tom

The highest abrasion resistant FC that I have found is Sunline Shooter. Diawa J Fluoro is close to Tatsu in performance. Consider Seaguar AbrazX for abrasion resistance, I have no experience with AbrazX only used Tatsu. Tom

Why use FC? Maxima Ultra Green copoly 8# (.010D) or 10.# (.012D) has very high abrasion resistance and stronger knot strength, try a filler spool before buying bulk spools. Tom

In your price point Shimano SLX MGL 70 now SLX 70XG is excellent. Tom PS, sold my Daiwa Tat’s for the above reels!
