The hook size is #4 as I recall, 4 or 5 good choice. Sometimes bass strike the rear prop and treble. Maybe slowing down the hook set like a top water lure to get the bass a chance to get 2 hooks in it’s mouth. Good hooks help but it maybe too fast hook set is your issue? Good luck, Tom

Bagley BangO comes in several sizes what size are you using. Zo wire hooks are lighter weight no need to use braid, use Owners split rings. Crank and reel set with rod sweep and set your drag at 3 to 3 1/2 lbs. Tom

Overcast reduces depth of light allowing predators like bass to roam more. Bass have superior eye sight then their prey advantage bass. If the bass are active hunting they will chase lures take your pick. I prefer to use jigs in lieu of faster moving lures because reduced light allows crawdads to be more active and big bass eat crawdads. Tom

Set your drag at 8 lbs, 1 gallon of water weighs 8 lbs, try lifting it with your combo. 8 lbs of drag is max force your rod can withstand. 40 lb /.013D braid may cut your hands whereas 60 lb / .016D is easier to handle. Your reel has a drag used it! Tom

If the lures/hooks are dry when sealed in a box no problem. If the lures are wet and sealed without air circulation corrosion will occur. Desiccant's help to absorb moisture. I drilled 1/8 dia holes in my regular Plano box’s for years without any lure or hook rust, air is your friend mitigating corrosion. Tom

Back in the Late 50’s a lure came out that could catch nearly every fresh water sport fish across the country and still works today. I was a dock boy working or helping at a boat landing when this lure 1st came out. The Finland Minnow. The lure was too light to cast on traditional bait casting reels and spinning reels were not popular at that time. Boat flipping bass started with the use of 8’ heavy flipping rods and became popularized when B.A.S.S. stopped the use of landing nets. It’s Monkey see monkey do practiced the TV pro’s made popular. I can’t remember boat flipping any bass intentionally. The hard landing and slim coat damage doesn’t show up right away it’s leads to post catch mortality. MFL has the right procedure for tournament caught bass; no livewell needed and makes an effort to protect the bass health. Tom

Spotted Bass are similar to Smallmouth Bass regarding prey, lure preference and location. If Blueback herring are in the lake then Spots group up on the herring schools, watch for birds and use 4”-5” surface lure like Gun Fish 117 Herring. Finesse living rubber jigs in brown/green with green trailer chartreuse tipped tail. Soft plastics greens w/chartreuse tail and cinnamon brown w/ orange tipped tails work everywhere for Spots.
