Your all time favorite Shimano baitcaster.
My 1st Shimano was the Bantam 1000 sweet reel. The Calcutta 250 was my 1st swimbait reel a real workhorse. Currently SLX 70MGL best performing reel under $150 on the market IMO. Tom

Trolling motor speed control preferences
I am a slow poke like to move at a slow walking speed to see what’s happening and stop moving often to make several cast picking an area apart and catch bass passed over by anglers in a hurry. I use the OB to move faster or changing location. Tom

Absolutely in love with jigs!!!!
Your right I know a thing or two about bass jigs! Tom
-
Absolutely in love with jigs!!!!
A jig isn’t any better than the hook used to make it and Siebert uses premium sharp hooks, plus hand tied skirts. Tom

Who uses a snap vs. tieing on every time?
Very few lures I use a Hyper Weld size 2 snap. If the snap improves the lures action like crank baits otherwise tie direct. Tom
-
WHAT SIZE AND BRAND OF SNAPS DO YOU PREFER?
I use Owner Hyper Weld size 2, light weight with round bend and strong. Snaps on crank baits, structure spoons some top water lures. Tom

Broken line on a pb!!!!
If it’s a DD bass I am getting my feet wet! Tom

What is the longest you would keep unopened line (mono/fluro) before disposing?
Freezing temperatures and temperature exceeding 105 degrees is stressful to mono lines. FC line isn’t as susceptible to temperature stress as mono. UV affects both Mono and FC so keep your stored line in a cool dark place and it will stay good for years. Tom

What are Pre and Post Frontal Weather Conditions?
With todays Doppler radar meteorologist can see approaching low and high pressure systems days before they arrive making forecasting fairly accurate. All we need to know is available in advance. Low pressure systems spin counter clockwise lifting the air mass creating clouds and moisture (pre front). High pressure is the opposite rotating clockwise pressing air mass downward. The area in between (post front) creates winds clearing clouds. Low pressure is generally positive for fishing whereas high pressure is negative due to wind and bright clearing sky. Severe low pressure is a hurricane very dangerous whereas severe high pressure creates high winds also very dangerous. Tom

1st Baitcaster MH Fast or Moderate?
Nearly everything within 1/4 oz to 5/8 weight lures. Top water, spinner baits, buzz baits, shallow and medium diving crank baits including lipless lures, jigs 1/4, T-rig with 1/8 and 3/16 oz sliding sinkers etc. MF would be better but a little harder to prefect your casting timing. I use my MF as a utility rod for all the above except jigs over 1/4 oz. Tom

1st Baitcaster MH Fast or Moderate?
Boat it bank fisherman? Your spinning tackle is very good for several soft plastics and finesse presentations. 5” wacky rigged Senko’s weightless and Flick Sake 1/8 oz jig w/ Jackall 4.8 worm and Ned rigs for the MF rod. Drop shot and Finesse C-rig for the ML rod. I suggest the M mod for the bait caster to learn to cast with using a variety of lures 1/4 iz to 5/8 oz. Also suggest using 12 lb Big Game mono, good line that isn’t expensive for the 1st year. Anglers use to spinning combo’s usually try to whip the cast and that doesn’t work with bait casters, let the rod lunch the lure! Tom
-
why am I much less successful with full sized jigs?
Depends on where you fish, depth, cover, structure, weather etc, etc. For example where I fish in deep steep rocky sparse cover lakes my 7/16 oz hair jig w/ pork trailers works good down to 25’. Tom

Big temp swings.
The over night temp drops only affects about 6” of surface water unless it’s windy. Bass are conditioned to severe weather changes during pre spawn and generally stay in water deeper then 8’ moving shallower as the core water warms. Good luck and catch that DD! Tom
