  1. Does it really do what they say it does? Surely you can still backlash with it...
  2. I never really knew much about these reels until today. Has anyone ever fished with one of these? What are your impressions?
  3. Sounds good:) What about the Daiwa reels? Is the Zillion worth a look?
  4. Sorry- I wasn't bragging. Uncle Sam just didn't hurt me as bad as I figured. I have no brand preference, but I like left hand retrieve on all my reels. I have heard the Castaic is a great reel for this, and it seems reasonably priced, but as I said I'd spend the extra if it was necessary...
  5. Guys, my tax return is treating me much better than I thought:) What are the qualities of a great reel for flipping and pitching? I am looking for a quality one, and I can spend up to 350.00 or so if need be...
  6. Guys, at what price point can a truly good rod be bought? I have spent 100.00 on some spinning rods, but I'll go higher if need be. In your opinions, at what cost do you notice a step up in durability, build quality, and most of all sensitivity. Further, at what price point do you start getting diminishing returns?
  7. Are you inferring that I am not enthusiastic?! Just kidding:) It is a relief that I can pull it all off with three casting rods, cuz that is all I can afford...
  8. Can any of these pull double duty for spinnerbaits or topwaters?
  9. Guys, I'd like to build a three rig casting arsenal for bass. I realize that some folks have a rod for every concievable situation, but I don't have the means to do that. I use a St. Croix spinning rod for my senkos, shakey heads, and the like. I currently own a Revo STX and a Shimano Citica and I will probably buy another Citica to round out my reels. What is the best way to cover most of the common techniques with three rods? I realize that a crankbait rod is probably a must, but please weigh in and give me some direction. I'd like to build the most versatile setups that I can. I'll take all the details and advice I can get.... Thanks, NRA
  10. What would make a good spinnerbait rig, if you had to name a rod and reel?
  11. My question too. Where do you fish? What are your waters like in terms of clarity and cover? Do you have more than one outfit? Maybe you guys misunderstood me. I wasn't asking for advice. I was asking what you would put together for 100.00 that you felt like you could take to any spot in the U.S. (be it a farm pond or a large lake) and catch bass regardless of weather, cover, etc.
  12. I know alot of guys have a HUGE assortment of lures dedicated to catching bass. If you had to start from scratch, could you fill a box with what you need for 100.00 or less? Would that get you what you need for most situations? Give us an itemized list:) I think this thread might be fun....
  13. A 6600 series c3, for the low gearing you speak of. You can always add a bearing later if need be...
  14. Yeah, it isn't a Shimano :
  15. Can you guys explain the difference between the Shimano reels sold stateside and the ones sold in Japan? I realize that could be a broad question, but I mean the abridged version:)
  16. Good call- better grab a Loomis...
  17. I bought her a Citica, so she should enjoy the reel. I was looking at a Lightning Rod for 40.00 or so, but I think the Shimano may be much nicer for the same price.
  18. What is the best bet on an affordable casting rod? I am looking for a 6' medium heavy graphite rod. My wife does not want to spend alot because she is not convinced that she won't end up returning to her spinning gear...
  19. Seems as if I have heard that somewhere before....
  20. These little points have helped me learn alot- 1.) Don't use too long of a rod for you. I started using a 7' and had nothing but problems. I switched to a 6'6" and it balanced the rig alot more. 2.) Don't use an extremely full spool. If your spool is full, peel off about 10 yards and throw it away. When you get better you can use more line. These things have made it MUCH easier for me to get a feel for baitcasting. I went from backlashing every 5 casts, to comfortably throwing overhand 30 yards with ease.
  21. $200.00 would get you a Shimano Symetre spinning reel and a St Croix Premier medium power fast action rod. I have this setup myself and have landed a ton of fish on it. A very nice rig for a beginner...
  22. September, laminated shad tiki stik, 5 pound largemouth 20.5 inches
  23. I can say that I have had instances where I was using a red hook and after trying everything else, I finally swapped it for a standard EWG and started catching fish. This seems to be more prevalent on certain waters that I fish and less on others, so I have quit buying the reds unless that is all that is in stock.
  24. You couldn't be more right. My father in law fishes the river alot and like he says, "If you won't cast into the junk, you won't catch much." Still, I have lost enough lures that I wanted to help my odds as much as possible.
