  2. Here is the full story.... SAN DIEGO The sport boat Intrepid is the newest boat in the Point Loma-based long-range fleet, but it will weigh in a yellowfin tuna Friday morning that could set a record for the sport. Bill Falter of Vista, one of the anglers on the Intrepid's trip that ends Friday at 10 a.m. at the Point Loma Sportfishing dock, boated a yellowfin that taped out at 381 pounds aboard the boat. Carol Wood, general manager of the Intrepid, said Thursday that Capt. Dan Nichols measured all the bigger tuna and did so conservatively. Capt. John Grabowski of the Red Rooster III said Nichols' conservative measurement, or finding one inch or more of girth on the tape measure, could mean the fish will weigh 20 pounds more than the original estimate. To reach the estimated weight of a fish, measurements are taken at the thickest point for girth, and the length is measured from the point of the jaw to the crook of the tail. The captains then multiply the square of the girth in inches by the length in inches and divide by 800. If Falter's fish weighs in at the original estimate of 381 pounds, the tuna will move into the No. 4 spot on the sport's all-time top 10 of heavyweight cows ever weighed in at Point Loma. The current top four, according to data collected by Bill Roecker of FishingVideos.com and the San Diego Sportfishing Council: Mark Gasich, 399.6 pounds, Polaris Supreme, Clarion Island, Nov. 15, 1992. Dave Manella, 395.4 pounds, Royal Polaris, Clarion Island, Feb 19, 1993. Curt Wiesenhutter, 388.75 pounds, San Benedicto Island, April 1, 1977. Al Herzog, 380 pounds, Qualifier 105, San Benedicto Island, Jan. 11, 1981. Wiesenhutter's tuna, caught on 80-pound test line, is the International Game Fish Association's line-class world record for 80-pound line and also the IGFA all-tackle record. Kenneth Yokoe has the record for 130-pound test line for a 376-pound, 6-ounce yellowfin he caught at Clarion Island on Jan. 5, 1996 while fishing on the Royal Polaris. Falter's tuna won't be considered for any IGFA record because of the size of the line he supposedly used to land the tuna. According to a boat report filed by Nichols on the Intrepid's Web site, Falter hooked the fish while fishing a kite rig with a live, jumbo squid pinned to a custom double hook leader with a 18/0 Mustad 39960D circle hook and a 12/0 7691 stinger hook attached to 600-pound Soft Steel leader. He backed that up with 200-pound Jerry Brown hollow Spectra on an Avet Pro EXW 50-2 and a Seeker 6463 XXXH Black Steel graphite rod. This fish really didn't stand a chance, Nichols wrote in his daily log on the boat's Web site. In addition to the 381-pounder, Falter also caught another tuna that taped at 246 pounds. Angler Corey Kong has one that is estimated to be 337 pounds. Tom Hoskins has one that taped at 301 pounds. Even Joseph Talasy, who is 91 years old, boated a tuna that taped at 191 pounds. The Intrepid is owned by Ken Price. The boat made its first trip Aug. 22 after many delays in construction. Here is a pic of the toad
  3. I think you gotta use different baits other than bread and corn to catch grass carp. I use bread and corn all the time but the carp i catch are either common carp or koi carp.
  4. That is a HAWG. Anyway did you return it to the water and did it swim away ok? I notice there is blood comeing from that fish's gills. Anyway great catch.
  5. How did that shopping cart fight? How far out were you when you hooked it and did you ever get it to shore to get your lure back?
  6. Nice fish That is a long and lean yet healthy largemouth bass. The crappie is an absolute hawg for a crappie. Its pretty rare to catch one that big.
  7. What did you think when you hooked into that tire? That must have been pretty heavy?
  8. Just ask for a gift card because most non fishermen/woman will end up getting you the wrong baits.
  9. I went out fishing last week with a friend and he managed to catch an old kids shoe. Just like in the cartoons we watched as kids. It was pretty funny to see. I have also caught lots of things besides fish while fishing includeing a turtle, a duck, an old landing net, a glove, and a sock. What odd things have you guys managed to catch that are not fish?
  10. Just wondering guys how small does a bass have to be for you to class it as a "dink"? I know it is different for everyone. For some people a bass is a bass no matter what size. To most people however a small fish is classed as a "dink". For me a "dink" would be any bass that weighs under one pound. A 1-2 pound fish is at least fun to catch for me so I do not consider them dinks. However for some people( hawg caller, Fourbizzle, Fish Chris, Roadwarrior, ect) a dink would probably be any fish under 5 LBS. Just wonder how small a bass has to be to be considered a dink for you guys?
  11. Florida, Georgia, California, Texas are probably the best four states for bass fishing...
  12. Wow avid nice job on such a great day and the new pb. Also great job with the pictures... you actually used a camera . I wish I had a day like that while bass fishing.
  13. Yeah man thats the lure i ended up buying.
  14. I honestly dont see why so many people have a problem with bass fishermen who use live bait even is it is legal live bait. Yes you cant use live bait in tourneys and yes it is much easyer to catch large bass with but it is very good to use if you just want to have fun and catch a lot of nice bass quickly. Live bait is great when your takeing friends fishing for the first time because it will make sure your newbie fishing friends will catch their first bass. Then there is always the fight with the bass which is just as hard as if you are useing a lure. Nice catches man.
  15. I just bought one because you reccomended it. It was a very cheap swimbait that was only about $2:50. I know it will not catch fish right now but i plan to throw the minnow in the spring after the spawn. I did however test my kickin minnow in my swimming pool today and was realy happy with the action it had. I know it will catch me some nice bass when they start feeding actively again. I got the one that is greenish in color and has similar patterns to a bluegill or baby bass. There are no shad or minnows in most of the lakes I fish so a greenish color would work best I think.
  16. I guess your name is not "Hawg Caller" for no reason You seem to post nice fish every few days. Your first post had a 7.5 LB bass, your second post had two 6 LB bass. This post has an 8 LB 11OZ bass. Those are some HAWGS.
  17. I actually saw a kid at my local lake useing that rocket rod. I actually thought it was quite funny. I also bet there has never been a decent fish caught on the rocket rod or the pencil rod.
  18. Just relax its probably just normal maintinance. It will be better in a couple hours....
  19. I have been catching lots of bass on rattletrap type baits recently. They are working realy well for me. The question is what other baits work well in the winter time? I am asking this because I have been throwing rattleing lipless cranks only for about a month now and would like to know what other baits will produce as this time. I have used small worms as well but only have caught a couple small fish. I am just wondering what other baits are good fish catchers this time of year, in murky water, and in a shallow lake? Would anyone reccomend fishing swimbaits or anything like that or you think the only way il be able to catch bass is the lipless cranks that have been working for me already?
  20. Yeah that thing is a joke but the sad thing is it looks like they are actually tyring to sell it. Also it seems they are not selling it as a joke/ gag item but as an actual quality piece of fishing equipment. Whats sadder is that there will be some people who will waste $20 on that thing. I bet the rod breaks very easily and that the spincast real will also break after a few outings. I have to admit it is realy funnt though.
  21. argh i cant see the pic. Id like to even if they are dinks
  22. Hey thanks for the tip. Also thanks to everyone for telling my buying this lure is a mistake. I was just down at my local sporting goods store and bought the kickn minnow instead of the kickn slab since everyone told me the slab is junk and that the minnow works well. I think the minnow would be more of a summer/fall bait though . Anyway tomorrow im going to try to kickn minnow in my pool to see how it swims(yes i know i have a problem, I often test out lures in my pool)
