I was hoping to get out before taking a couple of weeks off to fish down south, but the weather does not look promising.  My departure is less than three weeks away, so I'll be depending on info from you guys when I get back.

I think I am gonna head down to the Merrimack tomorrow for a bit and try out my St. Croix. While I am playing with that I'll set up a rod for carp. If I run into floating glaciers I am in trouble lol. I just need to get out there!

Got a new surf rod, took it to the beach on Sunday to test it out. No fish, just wanted to see how well it would throw my plugs.

I'm starting to see some area of open water on local ponds.  Fifty degrees with rain tomorrow should remove a lot of the ice, hopefully most/all of it.

Concord River in the Bedford area is open under the bridge - fished it yesterday. As well as the Assabet River down the street from my home in Hudson - fished that as well. No luck yet, but everything is breaking up nice.

 

Ponds are starting to show open areas at the channels, so I too am hoping this upcoming warmer weather and rain will help break up these winter omens.

That's good news Tom, I figure your area will open up faster than us north of you. Hope all goes well down south, I suppose this is your annual trip to see your daughter?

I forgot to post this a few weeks ago thought it was pretty d**n cool. Me and my buddy caught this jumbo perch on a trap. Ever wondered why they get so fat!?! That's 2 bass, 3 pickerel and 2 Sunny's in that guys gut lol.

Another look today.  Sawdy, Stafford, S Watuppa are still frozen shore to shore except for the areas where culverts drain from the roadways.  But it has to be thin.

I might take a ride to Cape Cod today, and check out a few ponds. 

I heard that places down the Cape were still primarily iced over around 6" or so. 

I checked out Great Herring in Bourne/Plymouth, the only open water is at the north end where the stream from Little Herring pond flows into it.  Other than that, shore to shore ice.  There were a few dark patches, and at the south end, the cove had a lot of water on top of the ice, but no open water.

 

There are a couple of small, shallow bodies of water in the Wareham area, that were almost ice free.  But the deeper ponds, not so much.

 

Didn't try to cross the canal.  A gasoline tanker rolled over at the rotary on the Cape side of the canal a couple of days ago.   They are still cleaning up the mess, and traffic was backed up for over a mile to cross the canal.  I got off 25 at Wareham and took route six north to the herring run at the canal.  From there, I headed toward Great Herring.

I saw some open waters at some smaller ponds in Canton, but nothing in the bigger/deeper waters. I hope the rains today will help, I'm off next week and would love to wet a line!

 

 

All open with no floating glaciers on the Merrimack here in Haverhill. No luck but my goal was to just out my new rod and i am very satisfied with my first st. croix purchase. Just need to feel what its like to have a fsh on with it

I drove by Blue Hills Reservoir, Houghton's Pond, Jacobs Pond, and Whitman's Pond yesterday to see what there was to see.

 

Blue Hills is solid and looks very, very low compared to last Fall.

 

Houghton's Pond is also solid except for the little creek on the Southwest side.  Nothing open enough to cast without bouncing baits.

 

Jacobs Pond is again, solid, so I followed the footsteps and trekked across it to the Northwest walking bridge where there was a narrow opening.  The only wildlife I saw there was a lonely Swan sleeping on the ice.  It looked like a lot of ice fishing was done there lately.  

 

Whitman's Pond is 90% frozen with some open water on the route 53 bridge.  I didn't drive down to the dam on the other side.

 

Unless we get seasonably warm weather, I'm figuring the ice will be here at least 3 weeks to a month. Hopefully I'm wrong and it melts sooner.

I'm surprised.  South Watuppa is almost ice free.  Sawdy still has ice in the shallow north and south ends, but the middle is wide open across the pond. 

 

At this rate, they should be clear of all the ice in another couple of days.
