Lookin for knots that won't break off of my lures!

There are a million different variations to try, but easy and reliable I recommend the palomar knot.

Palomar and Improved Clinch knots are 2 of my favorites. I'll second thoroughly wetting the knot before tightening it down and then take a good look at the finished knot to make sure it is correctly done.

Palomar. It's one of the best knots. The Modified Clinch is also very good. As you are a newbie, i would suggest that you read the Fishing Articles that are available on this site. There is an encyclopedia of information there. Lest I forget, welcome to our forums.

X2 on the Palomar. It's not the best knot in the world(some will disagree)but it's the easiest and breaks at somewhere well over 90% of line strength. Also X2 on wetting the knot before drawing down. Heat plays havoc with the line and drawing the knot down without first wetting causes line heat.

Line or braid can be expensive. I use the Palomar if its a jig/small lure that can be slipped thru a small hoop easily b/c there is a long wasted tag end. If its a 4"+ lure, San Diego jam knot.

Only knot you need to know is the uni knot. Can use it for leaders even.

Palomar knot

Palomar for mono and braid. And it does fine. For flouro I have had some issues with the Palomar knot!

I may have to try the Zona's shark knot for FC.

yea for braid and mono, the palomar is king but fluoro, only zonas shark knot for me. ive straightend hooks with that knot tied using sunline sniper and it cinches down perfect every time. i dont feel comfortable using a palomar with fluoro. my ds knot is always the miller knot.

Palomar for almost everything, make sure it's wet down good before you tighten it though or you'll damage your line. I've heard the San Diego Jam is a good strong knot but hard to tie. Uni knot is good for attaching leaders or backing.

i switched to a san diego jam and never looked back. Works for mono, FC, and braid.

Just vary the amount of wraps.

Isn't Zona's "Shark Knot" nothing more than a Berkeley Braid Knot

i have no clue, ive never seen, tied, or heard of the berkely braid knot but who knows lol

Compare to Zona's Shark Knot

I've been looking at knots because everyone loves the Palomar and I hate it. Anyway I realized that I don't think I tie a named knot, or else I can't find it. I tie it like an improved clinch but I go through the eye twice. When finishing I don't do the "improved" part. what is this a double clinch knot??? I don't use this for braid. The best knot I have used is the one PowerPro suggests for their braid. I don't use this for mono because it takes a little longer to tie. I can tie the first knot I mentioned in the dark.

Okay I tested this Shark Knot several times and, while it looked great at first, I don't like it at all now. It was weird to tie and difficult to get cinched down correctly. I'm pretty deft of hand so this shouldn't have been that big of a deal for me. I pulled it directly against a palomar in three different tests and it lost every time. It has a lot of wraps and loops to get lubed up and tightened down correctly.

I'll play around with it a little more to see if I can get it to tighten down better but, for now, I can tie a palomar quicker and it holds much better.

hmm, ive never had an issue with breakage or cinching the shark knot down correctly. its really not that hard to tie. ive broken off using the palomar with fluoro more times than id like. weak knots mean lost fish and baits which in turn means me losing money on tournament day. no bueno.

The shark knot looks way more involved than I care to get into, it may or may not be a good knot, but for the bulk of fishing, it's overkill IMO. I'd almost be willing to bet that when knots fail it's because the drag on the reel is way tighter than it should be or the knot just wasn't tied right. A proper drag set takes quite a bit of tension off the knot, the old standby fishermen's clinch knot held fine for decades (even with braid), hard to believe it suddenly quit working, it's my most used knot and my knots seldom fail.
