Hello everone, I have a dumb question. So, on Berkley chigger craws and other soft plastic baits, on the claws of the bait, there are these thin, plastic connectors connecting the claws. Should these be removed? Are they meant to be removed?

Yes I usually just pull them apart and fish them that way. I know people who leave them connected and catch fish like that. It moves more water since it is a bigger area but them again it has less action since it just one big peace basically. Both of those characteristics can be good at certain times, it just depends on what the fish want.

These baits I believe are very similar to the Zoom Super Hogs. They have outer leaf like appendages, and a middle flap that is held together by a thin connection. It does give you 2 options on how to fish it. You can use it like a flipping otter type bait, or seperate them to give them more of a craw like look. You just have to experiment with the conditions.

I mostly take mine off(seperate), but there are certain baits that I leave them on, because it holds the bait together, and gives it a slower fall....

Actually this is a good question. I've had several people who were just getting into bass fishing go fishing with me and this question has come up more than once. And, I have caught fish using the craw both ways. When I am pitchin I leave the claws together so it leaves less of a chance for a claw to grab on to a reed or dock post. Good question,keep them coming!

I agree, this is a good question. Same thing goes for a lot of other baits including PTL craw d'evores or any other beaver type bait..... Keep them on or pull them apart and you got 2 different baits.... Try them first with craws connected and if that isn't working, pull then apart and see what happens

I recently contacted Berkley regarding the topic, and they replied to me telling me the plastic strips should not be removed. I have always taken the strips off, and people on the forums say you should remove them any explanations?

They are meant to keep the baits from deforming in the package, and supposed to be removed. That being said, nothing says you can fish them any way you like, whatever you find that catches fish, thats the name of the game.

If you are asking whether the "pincers" should be separated, than yes, I generally do that.  But I've also forgotten and caught fish too.  If you're asking if the little plastic tabs need to be removed, I don't think it affects the action much.
