Favorite Soft Plastic Frog And Rig?

Featured Replies

I want to expand my frog fishing this year and would like to start by adding some of the soft plastic frogs to my arsenal. I am referring to the plastic frogs that you burn across the top (legs create almost a buzzbait action) such as the Zoom Horny Toad or the Rage Tail Toad. I already have a few SPRO's so I want to add some of these other soft plastic frogs for more versatility and also to cover more water in a given time.

So my questions are:

1) What is your preferred soft plastic frog?

2) How do you rig it?

3) What hooks do you use with your rig? Are they weighted?

1) Zoom horny toad: Greenpumpkin/pearl belly color

2) Weightless, weedless texas rig

3) Gamakatsu 5/0 EWG superline hook.

Stanley ribbit or bogbaits frogs with either a 4/0 or 5/0 screw lock with no weight.

The Stanley ribbit with the Stanley frog hooks.

Zoom horny toad, solid white or solid black

weightless Texas rig

4/0 Gamakatsu EWG superline hook, they aren't weighted

1. Stanley Ribbit (regular size not the Bull Ribbit) - four go-to colors (Watermelon Pearl, Black, Catalpa and Louisiana Craw)

2. Traditional Texas rig using an Aqua Dreams 4/0 swimbait hook (Mustad hook)

3. Weightless (the frogs have enough weight already, but a slow sink followed by a painfully slow retrieve can be deadly pre-spawn.....)

1. Stanley Ribbit Frog

2. Weightless, or with a very light weighted hook (See #3)

3. Crew-Lock style EWG hook, possibly a lighter weighted version depending on conditions.

Berkley powerbait realistix kicker frog, tex-posed on the 4/0 gammy hook that is included in the pack of 3. I have no reason to look at any other frog since I found these .

Zoom Horny Toad or Stanley Ribbit

Weightless

5/0 Trokar Flipping Hook

Rage Toad

weightless, weedless, Tx rigged

5/0 Moaner Stroker

Gives you the most commotion of all the plastic buzz-style toads, or offers a more subtle presentation when you cut out the insides of the legs. This allows you to fine tune the presentation even further.

Right on!  I use the same setup.  I will go with a black Horny Toad at times as well.

The only one I have ever used is a Zoom Horny Toad.  I fish them t-rigged with a 1/4 ounce weight and drag them across the bottom.  The color I use most is green pumpkin.

1.) Stanley Ribbit. Watermelon Red. I have never felt like I needed any other color, and even thought I tried them, nothing produces as well around here for me. :Idontknow:

2.) Weightless, weedless Texas rigged.

3.) Gamakatsu EWG 4/0 or 5/0

Rage Lobster rigged on a 5/0 hook, 1/8th oz.
It's sweet, subtle and it always gets bit.
Especially deadly when you kill it at weed edges or pockets.

Rage toad moves more water than my outboard! makes a great search bait; cast and wind until you get a fish/hit, then I slow down with a hollow belly.
