I Saw something awesome the other day at a small 1 acre pond I frequent. I hooked a small, half lb bass close to the bank and as I was skiing him across the surface, like dink bass get reeled in, I saw a huge (8+ I'm guessing) break the surface and swallow the bass I had on my line. I was in disbelief as my line took off with my catch in the lunker's mouth. I let him run a second and tried to set the hook through my catch to no avail. I pulled the dink out of her mouth. Has this happened to any of you before? It has happened to me with caught bluegill but never a bass.

Happened to be, probably 7-8oz bass felt big. Turned with my line about 20 ft away and thought it was heading under the dock. 3-5 lb bass jumps out of the water and I thought I had a good one hooked, I let it take some drag and when I was done ended up with only a baby on my line

It happened to me a few times in the past when i used to bring a flyrod down to one of the lakes that i would fish from shore. I would hook into a bluegill or golden shiner on the fly,then when bringing it back to the bank,i had some nice sized bass come up and try to crush them! 

Bass are predators so will eat the younger fish as will any predator.

 

Everyone was so scared about the snake fish in our waters. I figure with the bass, the pickerel, the northern pike and muskies in our waters who do you think will lose? The  bigger northern pike and Muskies have attacked people in the shallows.

I had one in the 8-10 pound range attack a 10" bass in a strip pit right next to the boat. She hit my bass from behind and had everything but the head of the small bass and my jerkbait in her mouth   I've had it happen other times but that was the only time when the larger bass could have easily eaten the fish I was reeling in. 

Bass definitely aren't too picky when it comes to food. They have no problem eating their friends.

I've seen bass that had eaten coots, gallinues, ducklings, snakes, turtles and baby gators.

Happened to me last weekend for the first time ever. Freaked me out to be honest. I was fishing off a dock over about 6' of water, throwing a little crappie jig trying out a new reel. Hooked into an eater sized gill, let him test my drag a bit taking my time with it. Got it up to the dock and was about 6" from pulling it out of the water when out of nowhere a giant bass blew up on the gill. My guess is she was hanging out under the dock. I did notice bass fry all over the dock and later caught a 3lb male fishing a brush hog hunting for the pig. The sight of that giant bass blowing up on a gill 2' from me was awesome.

Between 8-10lbs would be my rough guess.

When I was a kid I was fishing a pond with a crappie spinnerbait and hooked a small 6 inch bass.   Flailing on the surface a bigger bass slammed it and I had it on for a moment before loosing it. 

 

A few years ago I hooked a small 10 or 11 inch bass on a dropshot, and while reeling it in a pike nailed it.  I fought it for 30 or 40 seconds and got it close enough to the boat that I could see the hook was no where near the pike's mouth.  It just had a good hold of it.  Then I really wanted to land it!    Nursed it for another minute or so but it finally let go.  Still had the bass, and it looked like it went through a paper shredder.   lol

haha, I actually had this happen on Sunday (though with NH-sized bass). Was reeling in a dink and had two bass, probably in the 2-3.5lb range, come after him and take some swipes, but even if they had engulfed him I think a hookset would be unlikely. Certainly is fun to see though! I wished there was another person next to me to toss a plastic to them and hook up.

I have had it happen with small catfish, and sunfish, but never with a larger bass.

Ive had musky and pike eat bass before while I was trying to land them, never other bass though.

Happened to my father recently, who was fishing with me from the shore (crystal clear water).  He had a dink on the line, and he was letting it run a little right at the bank, hoping it would come off the hook on its own.  A lunker probably at least 8 pounds shot out and grabbed his bass, actually ripping it off the hook, just a few feet off the bank.  It tripped him out.  

 

It was then we decided to start using larger baits at that spot.  

It makes you think, who makes an 8 inch bass swim bait? Haha
