Swim Jig Rod?

Featured Replies

Any of you guys have a dedicated swim jig rod? If so, what rod are you using brand, power, and action?

I've been bouncing around with different rods and I think I've found the one that works for me. 75% of the time I'm throwing a 1/4oz KVD and once in a while 3/8oz Dirty Jigs California. I started off using a 852 NRX (too light, couldn't set the hook how I wanted), then I tried a 853 GL2 (rod wasn't loading the 1/4oz too great on casts), now I'm using a 7'1" medium/ fast St.Croix LTB and it is awesome! I already know that I'm gonna have to pick up the Extreme.

I throw 1/4 and 3/3 oz NorthStar Original Swim Jigs and Seibert Outdoors.

Trailers include the Rage Tail Shellcracker & Menace; GYCB Swimming

Senko and the MegaStrike Fat Shad.

I throw the dirty jig in a 3/8oz, 1/2oz and 3/4oz size with usually a swimbait trailer from 3 to 6 inches.

I use a Shimano Crucial Crankbait rod 7'11" Med Hvy Action with a med fast tip. Shimano says it is a fast tip but is really a med fast tip or seems that way to me.

1/4 oz on a Loomis 803

1/4+ on a Loomis 804

I use a Dobyns 765 but I throw a much heavier swim jig than you, I never go under 1/2 weight and throw 6-9 inch swimbait trailer my lightest ones go about 1.2 onces. That rod can definitely handle lighter stuff though too

Dobyns 734 for me. The heaviest I throw is a Dirty Jigs 3/8oz with some manner of craw for a trailer.

my home waters are the mississippi river pools so i have to have a dedicated swim jig rod. i throw 1/4 oz most of the time. i throw them on a dobyns 733 in just about everything.

Dobyns champion 734 for most of my swim jigging.

90% of the time I am trowing a 1/2oz swimjig with a rage grub trailer.

For 1/4 oz. swim jigs I use a Dobyns DX 703/Steez 100.

For 3/8 & 1/2oz swim jigs I use a St. Croix LTB 7'1"MHXF/Calcutta TE 101GT.

I really want to purchase a T3 SV for the Dobyns, and move the Steez to a GLX 893.

RW, when you get a chance could you please post a pic of your swim jig/Shellcracker combo?  Thanks kindly.

I usually fish siebert, northstar and dirty jigs 3/8 - 1/2 oz flip/swim jigs. Occasionally I will fish the finesse original swim jigs in 1/4 or 3/8 ounces. I have tossed them on Loomis IMX 844, a DX 703, a Cumara 7'2 medium xf and now a megabass exreme mission type f.

For the waters I fish and how I fish them I would say extreme mission type f takes the cake. It just has that certain something to it that it is hard to explain. I can honestly say the rod can handle the 3/8 range as well as the 3/4 oz range. Larger RI dippers, swing impacts, and big hammers paired with 1/2 oz flip/swim style jigs has been stellar on this rod. It also doubles as a nice deep water jig rod.

If I was using 1/4 and 3/8 oz the 7'2 xf cumara would be top choice. Sensitivity of all 3 is very good as well. The best advice would be finding the right rod to fish the baits in your range plus trailer.

It sounds like Dobyns is where it's at! Been eyeing the DX703 actually. Megabass is the dream, can't wait until they start releasing some of the good rods over here in the U.S.

But for the trailers I'm using right now, usually a paca craw/ rage craw, havoc subwoofer, or some sort of grub.

I am using a *** *** Black 7' 3" M/F and I also use a Fenwick Aetos 7' 2" MH/XF rod for swim jigs. I mainly throw North Star original swim jigs in 5/16oz.

Threw 3/8oz Dirty jigs california with a rage craw today on a med/hvy 7' carbonlite pro qualifier 7:1 combo from BPS. IMO one of the best combos you can get for $159
