So I'm strictly an Abu guy, I own everything from a Revo S to an LTZ. I want to buy a finesse type baitcaster but the closest thing Abu Has is the LT, LTX and LTZ and they don't hold enough line that i'd personally like for throwing small crankbaits. I'm thinking about a Chronarch 51e or Core 51MG. How do the two compare to each other? Does the Core cast further?

 

Edit: BTW its getting paired with a XC72MM with .28mm (12lb) Invisx 

Can't comment on the abu's but I have several curado/chronarch 51's I use for all my standard cranking rods, with 12lb they have plenty of line capacity. I really don't feel a casting advantage against any of the 50's but smoothness improves when you spend more

How far out you getting 1/4oz and 3/8 crankbaits with them?

I average 40-45 yards with a 1/4 oz tube and weight on a 7' rod. I've got it now on my 7'3" Champion. I've yet to break it out to see how far.

The Strike King Spit n Shad is at 3/8 oz and I can usually launch it a bit further on a 6'8" rod medium.

That's with a Chronarch 50E and 40# braid

What reel will throw a shad rap size 5? Spinning only? 

Chronarch 50e will throw a number 5 with the right rod, and the right user. Half the people I fish with look confused when I start slinging weightless worms and flukes on a baitcaster. If you have your reel loose enough and a rod that'll load you can throw whatever you want really.

I have curado 50s, chronarch 50s, and a core 50.  As far as super finesse, it is hard to beat a core 50.  Mine is set up on a cumara 6'8'' mh/xf.  The rod is rated something like 1/4-1oz.  And 1 oz is not what it is suited for.  I can tell you this, I can fling a weightless fluke a country mile with it. 

 

That being said, I think you get a curado 50e or chronarch 50e and send it to Mike at DVT.  Get it supertuned, bearings and drags, and you now have what I call a "poor mans core"

 

BTW- I have 1 core and 5 curado/chronarchs -  You will be happy with them.  I see no need in buying the core unless you just have to have one, and if that is the case, I understand that too!

Ya, 3/8 was a bad example, my winch casts them fine. Its the KVD 1.0s it doesn't cast very well.

Like 00mod I also have a a few 50 sized shimanos reels. Starting with the core 50, JDM scorpion 1000xt, chronarch 50e, and curado 50e. They are great all purpose reels that can do the finesse game. Each is going to be slightly better up to the core. The differences may not be all that noticeable to the avergae person. The greatest advantage of the core is that its noticeably lighter and casts the best. It also has the fastest ratio of the 50 sized reels.

I read an interesting article on baitcaster finesse reels. Some of the guys that do it right are thowijg baits down to 1/8 and 1/16 of an ounce. The keys are fast spool bearings, a shallow but lightweight spool, and polished internals. If you take a chronarch 50e and throw in the upgrades mentioned above you will be well onto the reel $400+.

Best advice would be start with curado or chronarch 50e and flush the bearings and see where that gets you. Add upgrades and tuning options as you see fit and can afford.

I use 12lb on them all, throwing the 1/4's still gets out far enough to where I don't need to downgrade the power of the rod or drop the line diameter

if you're gonna spend the money on a core, look for a Shimano Aldebaran in the 5:8:1 gear ratio. It will cast a small shad rap or crank with ease paired with a medium moderate fast rod. No mods are needed, but spool bearings and a polish on the spool lips will make it very special. The core is a little fast for crank baits IMO.

I use nothing but spinning gear but I do not marry myself to one brand.  Shimanos are very good but so are many other brands each of them have positives and negatives.  I'm looking for comfort on my combination, drag performance, and line capacity for the particular sized reel.  IMO distance is coming from the rod I'm using and the type of lure, sling jigs are very hot now and they flat out catch fish. With their heavy weight and thin profile they really cut thru the air, my casts are probably twice as far as with a traditional lure.  I'm not using anything less than a 3000 reel, some brands in that size do spool considerably more line, they are getting more consideration.

I can launch a 1/4oz bait plenty far with my super tuned 50E Curado. Like others have said the right reel with the right line, setting, and rod in the hands of the right person will cast most reasonable baits a good ways. Heck I have a super tuned 200E5 on my cranking rod that casts a KVD 1.0 a mile when I'm cranking skinny water for smallies.

I am with Jeff on this. If the money is not a big issue, go with the Core.

Otherwise the Curado upgrade by DVT will meet all your needs and

expectations.

 

Another suggestion for increasing casting distance is the G.Loomis

BCR or NRX 893. I have my supertuned Curado 50E matched with

the BCR and Tatsu #10. This rig launches soft plastics, especially 

aerodynamic lures like a Fat Ika or Senko.

True, but the cost of a true finesse spool will add another $100+ but likely even more. It just depends on how far someone wants to take the finesse concept and how much they are willing to invest. I think forgoing the spool upgrade would be best at least to start and something to look at as a last resort if the performance still isn't there. I don't drop down to anything below an 1/8 oz on casting gear and my core 50mg7 spooled with 10# tatsu and a cumulus rod handle that very well.
