Headed up to Big Sam this weekend w family. Probably gonna drag the boat. Any ideas of where to fish--not location, just terrain: deep, shallow, etc. what kind of pattern y'all see there this time of year.

Front coming through this weekend so that'll scramble em but I'd say start looking 3-5 and depending on part of the lake, real shallow. 

Fished this weekend.

friday: fished coleman's, all the way back. Decent top water bite on top water: chugbug and ribbits (black-blue)-fished grass edges. Later switched to WMC flukes- fished hydrilla flats adjacent to creek channel. Caught 15 there, biggest 3.18. Later in day fished 8' hump at dam. Caught 5 there on Ned rig (wmr).

sat: launched at Jackson hill and fished islands between launch and bridge. Picked up 7 on spinner baits and 6th sense MVMT 80x live thread fin shad. Moved to Indian creek and fished the point there in 6-8 fow with no luck. Then on to mud creek and caught another 6 on fluke. Fish seemed to be off hay grass about 40 yes, on the edge of submerged hydrilla. Wind horrible!

sun: temp 50 and blowing out north. Back to colemans. No topwater bite.

fished the creek edges in back. Flukes again. Caught 11, biggest 3.94 and broke off a 5+; don't know what happened, the fish exploded and inhaled the fluke, set the hook and line snapped. Rod didn't have a chance to bend.  I had just tied on a fresh hook. ??? 

All flukes fished weightless.

I've never fished Rayburn but have always wanted to. If I put out at Ewing Park, what should I do/where should I go? I'd really like to try to do some pitching and punching mats. But the main focal point is to catch bass. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. 

Anyone been out to fish Big Sam lately? I'm sure the bass are slow, but any tips are appreciated. Looking to get out there one of the next couple of weekends.

Any shallow areas I should checkout within earshot of mill creek?

will start off shallow and see what's going on. Be going out of Harvey ramp, fishing that area of lake, has the frog bite or trap bite picked up yet?

Is anyone still using this thread? Big Sam is thriving, just had a 13.06 caught in 10' of water on a watermelon red J-Bug Carolina Rigged. Had some good luck in Veach Basin a couple weeks ago caught numerous 2  lbers and few in 3-4 lb range. Caught a 6 lb 5 oz on a magnum trick worm green pumpkin color fished wacky style over grass 7' water. I'm working right now but will be fishing the Big Bass Splash on the 20th and 21st. Best bet will be drains and ditches leading to spawning areas, there should still be some post spawn fish in these areas by that time. Be safe and God Bless!

Aint seen or heard from @shaneus lately!

 

Anybody have any suggestions for Veach Basin where and how to start learning to fish it? We primarily fish North from Marion’s Ferry to the 147 and we do a lot of flipping brush in dirty water and normally do well. We decided to run south yesterday and it kicked our butt! The combination of cleaner water and grass EVERYWHERE was kind of overwhelming. We finally ended up catching a few on a jig and Jerkbait off the end of a point but didn’t have a whole lot of luck overall. I’m not wanting anybody’s spot certainly just more what type water to target and what depth situations to look for? How do you flip that haygrass down there? I didn’t feel like my bait was making it to the bottom. If someone would rather PM that’s no problem.

A little late,  but I fished Rayburn this past Friday. Boated over 150 bass on drop shots, spoons, and blade baits in 32-34’ of water. Roadbeds, creekswings, and hard spots held big numbers. Not a lot of size but did have 2 over 4lbs and my top 5 would have went about 19lbs. Lots of fun!

Brought my son back with me to Rayburn yesterday to let him in on the action. We boated 70 and had well over 150 bites. Its hard for a 6 year old to set the hook in 34' of water lol. We had a blast and have memories that will last a lifetime. Same patterns, roadbeds and creek swings.

Been on Rayburn exclusively for a couple months now. We’ve had some great days! Thursday we boated 94 bass and about 20 whites. The fish are starting to move into prespawn stuff so we are moving with them. Still fishing deeper water,  but closer to spawning flats. Arigs, Crigs, and a dropshot

Sounds like your really excelling on this lake. I’m new to the forum but have been fishing the lake for years. We’re headed up next week/weekend Sunday through Tuesday to get ready for the rat-l-trap tournament if anyone wants to get together. I’ll also be up there the 18-20 for the tourney.
