Never Used Jigs Before...which Ones To Get

Featured Replies

Hey guys so I recently have started to really want to pick up some jigs. I would like to get some football jigs, finesse jigs, and some for tossing around structure like I would a texas rig. Anyways there are a ton out there and Im not really sure what I should look into. How are the strike king jigs? I liked the looks of some of those on *** but I wanted to see what other people recommended before making an order. Thanks guys!

I am just getting into jig fishing myself, I have heard good things from Siebert Outdoors jigs (one of BR's fine sponsors)... I've also heard great things from Moaner... Check them out, I haven't purchased either yet but when I become more comfortable with jigs i'll definitely be stock pilling!

Skinny Bear and Dirty Jigs are all that I will tie on

Siebert Outdoors

Moaner Predator

Seibert Big O Brush Jig

Northstar Black Series

Northstar Flip N Swim

Look at the structure you are fishing to determine type. For example I fish water where and Arkie head style can be fished all the time. Any of the above mentioned companies are great. Also, see if you have a local guy who makes jigs. I am fortunate to have G&G Bates here in Indiana.

Buy a few cheap jigs to start with. You'll get them snagged as a beginner.

The bitsy bug by strike king is a good choice. Usually they cost $2.

Try mean mouth lures. You will have to order them online. My favorite is the pro rocker jig.

Northstar Custom Baits and Siebert Outdoors are 2 great jig companies that sponsor this site and make awesome jigs. Personally I'd look into them and get a quality jig for a great price.

I fish Northstar jigs and do very well with them. Tons of colors and head options to fulfill your fishing needs. Grab some finesse, football, and alien style head in either the knockouts or black series and your ready to rock.

You may also want to grab some swim jigs if you want to cover water. Swim jigs are a great alternative to spinnerbaits and flat out catch fish.

Good luck!

x2 on this.  He nailed it.

For what your describing I would throw a Brush head jig like this  http://www.siebertoutdoors.com/index.php/brush-jig.  I also make the same head with Owner Deep Throat hooks or XXX strong hook.

A couple bluegill swim jigs or bleeding shad are also a great choice. http://www.siebertoutdoors.com/index.php/elite-g-swim

OK cool thanks for all the advice guys! The more I look at these I realize that I have a few more questions.

Ive read a lot that swim jigs are great in clear water, how effective are they in stained to muddy water? I'm in North Carolina and most of the lakes around my house stay at least stained.

For fishing wood, what head would I want? Is that the arky heads?

Thanks again guys!

If you have stained water I would recommend spinnerbaits.

I use Northstar for 99% of my applications and a Buckeye mop jig in PB&J for the other 1% . As far as colors, I would start with 3. A black and blue, a brown,  and a green pumpkin. You can fine tune your color secection once you get comfortable. Swimjigs are good in any situation but really stand out post spawn. The key to a swimjig is the trailer. I like paddletails and switch between a 3.5" and a 5" as needed. Again, 3 colors to start. Black and blue, white, and my go to is Bull Gill from Northstar.

Swim jigs work great in stained water.

Nothing works for me in muddy water.

I'll second the *** jig, my favorite jig by far. I was a little skeptical at first, but they do exactly what they say.

If you want in store jigs. Go booyah. They hold up better and look better than strike king jigs. The only strike king jig I really like is the finesse football.

Another vote for Siebert.  Can't beat his customer service and quality of products.
