Hard Jerkbait Deep

Featured Replies

What is the deepest water range you would consider using hard jerkbaits, before switching to something else in cold months? What is your favorite deep running hard jerkbait?

Forty feet in clear water with 20 feet of visibility. If they can see it they will come up for it. Rapala dd husky jerk, smithwick dd rogue, pointer 100 dd & matzuo prism shad dd.

I like to fish the LC Pointer SP 100 DD, it has a depth range of somewhere between  5-8ft.   Jerbaits work best in clear water situations where the fish can see them from a ways off, I have fished them in very deep water with success on lakes like Beaver Lake, AR.  It seems that water clarity and cloud cover play a very important part in the effectiveness of the these baits, along with the baits ability to suspend properly.

Everything above are good choices. I like the old staysee jerkbait too but none of them are going to get down past 8 feet really.

Au contraire! The LUCKY CRAFT Staysee 120SP will get much deeper than 8 feet. How about double that.

The Dobyns' STAYSEE 90SS V3 is a slow sink so if your patient you can fish it deeper as well.

Since they are discontinued I am probably safe unless A-Jay steals my stash.

Ever since that trip I've looked for them for you using every obscure connection I have.

No dice, still. :Idontknow:

The ones I've found aren't the older ones you have I believe.

Thanks buddy. I have still got a box full a few spares.

Now I'm a Discontinued Bait Snatcher ?

I might replace a few hooks or even change out a split ring here or there, I may even over indulge in too much Sushi but a but a Klepto, I am not.      :laugh5:

The only reason I mentioned your name is because you are one of the few that know where that stash resides.

I hear ya - and after seeing them in action - I've forever been on a secret & very covert search for more.

If there are any at all out there, whoever has them is doing an extremely effective job at keeping them on the down low.  But I'm still looking.

The Staysee is a good deeper jerkbait as is the Spro Mcrip.

Fish will come up, but if a deeper depth is desired there a couple of things that can be done in addition to using a deeper diving lure.  Both these methods are used in saltwater every single day, a wire leader will take the lure down a bit deeper or using a light egg weight just above a swivel is the most common ploy.  Same basic concept is used in trolling, using a torpedo style trolling sinker.

On the waters I fish I don't need to bat to get down 2 deep but I'll use a deep diving jerkbait in the lakes when the fish are suspended at about 12' to 14' over 20' to 30'. My favorites are the Xt3 deep which is discontinued but you can still find a few if you look, the X-Rap deep, and I'm beginning to like the perfect 10 rogue, but I didn't get a lot of time with it. I also give a shout out to the Ima flit 120 and the Staycee 120, those are truly deep divers that work but I don't list them as my favorites as there maybe only 2 or 3 days I get to use them.
