  • Son of a gun, it's getting creepy here lately, all these corpse threads resurrecting from beyond the grave, first a 10 year old post, now a six year old post ...... must be cabin fever.

Not only do they resurrect them but he just answered the question as of the OP was still looking for a response lol.

  • As "real" as what? Thats one of the most confusing statements I've read here??  They don't look as real as a real spinnerbait or....

The cheap Strike kings at Dick's had a ball bearing swivel and were a little more, around $3.

The walmarts used to be Strike Kings.  Don't even think there is a brand affilation now.  May be the same plant making them.  Cheaper components for sure.

But last spring.  I got several at their clearance price of 50 cents.   ;D

What about the academy brand spinners? Normally .79 and have cought plenty of fish on them.

Are those spinnerbaits, or in-line spinners?

the Academy ones (99c here) appear to be identical to the walmart ones.

I have everything from Northstar Custom Spinnerbaits, to the walmert ones.  I will use my NSC, Strikeking, H20, etc. spinnerbaits over the walmart ones unless I am throwing in some serious snag zones.  That being said, my friend outfished me 9 to 1 a month back with him using a walmart white spinner bait and me using an H20 spinnerbait.  Sometimes its the other way around, you never really know.  What I do know though, is that for 99c, you better believe I have a handful in my tacklebox ready to go if I know the fish are buried deep in some nasty stuff.  For 99c, you simply can't say no, especially if you know they catch fish.

You bet - I'm headed to WalMart today to grab some more :)

when i first started out bass fishing I pretty much strictly used the white wal mart spinnerbait. I really dont throw spinnerbaits much anymore for largemouths, the swim jig has just been more productive. I still throw the black wal mart spinnerbait with the single gold colorado blade and still hammer the smallmouth in a river just slow rolling it along the bottom.

A friend of mine took big fish in a fairly large tournament (70+ boats) on the Potomac a few years back using one of those cheap spinnerbaits. Fish was over 6 lbs.

I used to buy them because I broke off so many spinnerbaits, but when the store I worked at got bought out, Terminators went down to $2 apiece so I stocked up, and I'm still using those. Otherwise, I'd probably use the cheapos too.

from cal. and they don't sell them here.but visited a friend on the coosa river and bought a couple and they easily caught more bass for me than any other spinner i used.i think the size was just right for the size of the shad.

Buy a bunch at a buck each, then give them an exotic Japanese name and sell them online for $17 a shot.

If you can't catch fish in the winter, might as well catch some fishermen... :)

I've caught a ton of fish on the Wallyworld spinners. I have found during my years of fishing that the probability of losing a bait is proportional to the cost of the bait. Since they only cost $1 I NEVER lose one.

ive been catching fish on the walmart $1 spinnerbaits for years. i got some ive caught more fish than i can remember on and the skirts are still just fine. i have more problems with strike king skirts. the $1 buzz baits suck though. but for $1 you cant go wrong with the spinner baits. in fact since theyre only a $1 i have given them away to friends who liked them when they saw me catching fish with them. some fishing snobs might overlook all the cheaper priced baits, but i certainly wont especially if theyre productive...

That is the truth!! I have been fishing for a week on one of the Wal Mart spinnerbaits and didn't loose it, even to catching a few northerns.  Yet I loose a $6 spinnerbait in five minutes.

I have had decent luck with the bulk spinner and buzz baits from wal mart, cabela's, and gander mtn.  If it gets snagged, no big deal.

I can loose either the WalMart, or $$$ spinnerbaits with equal success! So, if I'm in risky water, I'm gonna go with the $1 bait! I lost a WalMart SB yesterday - a perfect cast, but the 20mph wind blew my line over several tree limbs so the SB is now hanging from a tree limb like a Christmas tree ornament - just my part of getting with the season... ;D

wouldnt a perfect cast account for the wind?  ;D

Dang - at least the bait landed exactly where I wanted it! It only ended up in the tree when I tried to pull the bait over the tree limb and it hung up!! ;D ;D

My friend, the frugal angler, has two spinnerbaits, both $1 Wally World models. He's had them since Cater was in office.  He kicked my butt from the back of my boat with one at Lake of the Ozarks Sunday. Of course, one trout action spinning rod is all he brings. Uses "vintage" 8 lb. line and never loses a spinner....

He also has one little "found on the bank" crankbait, but you wouldn't believe the stories of his catches on it if I told you.

GREAT story - I love it ;D   A great example of how little you actually need to catch fish, as opposed to what the Bait Monkey thinks you need...

First fish and first bigger fish (4.5lbs) that I ever caught on a spinnerbait came on the white with a blue head and single colorado blade wal mart special. The first tournament I ever fished in when I was 16 a guy won with a 7.5lb fish on a yellow and orange one. He had customized it with a small orange colorado blade in front of the regular colorado blade. It was the only fish anyone caught on a day that never made it out of the teens  :).

A couple of my fish were on the white skirt/blue head, but with a single willow blade. I've only got one of those left and my WalMart is out-of-stock; I'll grab some more whenever they get them in...

A good number of fish I caught were on a white/blue head, single blade. I cut the blade arm down about 3/8" added a snap to the swivel and switched between willow and colorado blades with the colorado blade being a bigger producer.

I have caught plenty of fish on them when fishing really close in to deep brush where I loose a lot of spinner baits. So I use these and there not a bad spinner bait the blades dont turn at slow speeds so thats the only down fall to these lures.... if you want to replace the swivel with a BB one you will have a much better bait.
