Just wondering how do you guys ship fishing rods also where do you guys get the rod tube from I found one website and it only ships 15 qty  instead all I really need is 5 qty  and really don't want to pay $50 dollars for 10 rod tube I not going to use . So that where my question starts how or where do you obtain your rod tube packages ? I'm trying to sell them.

I keep the ones my rods were in when they were sent to me.

 

Store them in the outside shed.

Thin walled PVC pipe from home depot - 4 IN, will holds 5 rods. Combine that with old newspaper and duct tape you're on your way

I sell a pretty good amount of collectible paper (posters, art, etc.) and have extensive experience with cardboard tubes.  Please believe me when I tell you that cardboard is NOT what you want when shipping a rod.  I am convinced that at least half of the postal workers in this country view any type of tube as a tool for office baseball.  So, I am guessing they might use rod tubes for jousting.  With the length of a rod, you need PVC.  Obviously paper products are shorter (usually 35" in my case), and even at that length, I use PVC for anything past $200 or so.  Also, do yourself a favor and buy end caps for the PVC.  Cutting and taping cardboard discs to put on the end sucks, and it is worth the few dollars.

I save and reuse the tubes from TW when I buy a rod, or , if I don't have any tubes, I use thin wlled PVC from the hardware/building supply store. I think a 10' lenth of 4" pipe is like $6-$8 from my local mom and pop store, and probably less at a big chain.

If I don't have a solid cardboard tube, definitely a pvc. if I use a cardboard tube I pack it really well.

Never sold a rod, but I have bought a few Online.    I've saved a few tubes, but unlike Sam, I do not have a shed to store them in or I would have saved more of them.  I like receiving rods in PVC tubes, but the cardboard ones from TW seem to be pretty good because they are not only solid but huge.  Not fond of receiving a rod in the smaller, thinner cardbard tubes some use although I've only ever received one broken rod, and that was because an end cover was missing.  I also have to agree about using  a plastic endcap if at all possible.

I also save and reuse the cardboard tubes. I use a good amount of bubble wrap and newspaper to make sure that the rod doesn't move when I shake the tube after packing. I always ship via UPS. It will cost a little more, but standard ground shipping is usually 3 days and I have never had a problem.

PVC is the only way I'll ship rods anymore. I've recycled the cardboard tubes from St Croix shipments and 100% of the rods arrive broken. They seem to be a 'one and done' deal.

Definetely PVC is the way to go. I buy central vacume piping when I can find it. It's strong enough and lighter so you save on the cost and shipping. 90% of the time ends up being reg schedule 40

This. Or just think of how many tubes a large retailer like Cabela's, Gander Mountain, or the like might have lying in the back somewhere (if you have one near you). Maybe even try Wal-Mart. I'm not sure if they use rod tubes, but they always let me go in the back to scavenge for boxes in their recycling piles.

Go to a local department store and ask for a carpet tube. Will probably be free or very cheap. They are incredibly tough and nearly impossible to bend in half.

Just make sure those suckers aren't even a hair over 84 inches long. I've always shipped 2 day priority as it has been the least expensive, though I noticed shipping costs went up a few bucks. Try and make a friend at the post office. Some pretty interesting folks can be found working there for sure.
