Dilemma

Recommended Posts

So the Old Lady gave me a brand new Revo Premier as a gift. This is a few tiers above what I usually use. I do own a couple Smokes and an STX that I've gotten second hand off of the Flea Market. She put a lot of time and thought into the gift but gave me the green light to return it and get whatever I would like/use most.  My first thought is it's a trap. I'll be scalped if I return it. But I got to thinking, such a nice reel deserves a high end rod IMO. So wouldn't it be wise to return the reel and use that money for a high end rod (Dobyns, St. Croix, Loomis) then pony up a little extra for a second hand Premier from the Flea Market? That way, the rod warranty would be valid and registered under my name and still show that she made a great choice in reel. You know, to show her I care and whatnot.

Anyway, I'm just looking for a few opinions on the matter. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Chase

Umm yeah you better keep the reel buddy. Had a situation exactly like this with an ex gf. If she put in thought and effort then that's saying something. You don't need an expensive rod to enjoy a nice reel.

KEEP THE REEL!!!!! and treasure it as your favorite reel. just splurge and get a really nice rod to pair it with like a St croix legend tournament, or a dobyns champion. and if she questions your purchase you can just tell her that she got you such a nice reel that you had to pair it with a rod in the same class.

She unknowingly gave you the green light on buying a high end rod.

PS,  A woman like that and a reel like that are both keepers.  :)

Just keep the reel, smile and thank her whenever you have the opportunity!

Keep the reel man. No matter what she says it will hurt her feelings if you take it back and then she may never get you fishing stuff again in fear of disappointing you. Sounds like you have a winner. My wife told me she looked at Daiwa stuff for Vaentines day and instead got me Fig Newtons. Needless to say I wish she hadnt even told me she was looking at Daiwa stuff. She said she was to overwhelmed with all the stuff that she didnt understand. What I am trying to say is she took a plunge and did great not many would even attempt to buy something like that. You can get a good rod these days for 100 to 150 bucks. I would go that route.

Definitely keep the reel! Save money later to find a partner (high end rod), don't have to be now.

IMO, it's bad form to return a gift of any kind. No problem here though, that's a nice gift that you can take pleasure using now and even more down the road on a high end rod.

Don't forget you now OWE her big time. Your next gift to her better have some serious thought put Into it or you will be in the dog house . Start taking notes on what she wants and likes now so you aren't scrambling at the last minute.

I'd say the watch and earrings with the name Michael Kors caught her fancy

If she buys you a $3oo reel and you're used to reels in $100 to $150 range from what you say then you better keep both her and the reel. rods tend to go on sale more often then reels so if I were in your shoes I'd graciously put that reel on any pole you own and wait for your nearest tackle shop to put rods on sale.

Consider yourself lucky, when I buy a few cranks or bags of plastics I feel like I'm being questioned by the Gustopo.

Another quick questions guys. I came across the free fleece offer on the Abu website (for reel purchased $199.95 or more). There's also a hooded sweatshirt promo (rod, reel, or combo $69.95 or more). I didn't know if I could double dip this beings the reel falls into both categories. I called Abu and the lady I talked to said she couldn't find a reason why I couldn't but also said it's not up to her and didn't want to make any promises. I was wondering if anyone has ever dealt with this before.

Another vote for keeping the reel.  I use to buy my wife Christmas gifts.  She'd take them all back and exchange them for something else.  I started taking her through the stores and letting her tell me what items she like.  I then bought her gifts from among those items.  She'd take them back.  She no longer gets gifts from me.  Ticks her off, but too bad.  Ticked me off first.  I'm not going to waste my time trying to buy her a gift only to have her return it.  Makes me feel very bad that nothing I buy her is satisfactory.  Well..........she has kept some jewelry that she graciously let me pay for.  :sad78:

You have a caring wife.  Keep it that way.  Keep the reel.  No need to spend $250-$500 to get a decent rod.  The Fenwick Aetos and Smallmouth, Kistler KLX, Phenix M1 and Recon 2, Powell Endurance, St. Croix Avid and Pinnacle Perfecta are just a few of the rods for $200 or less that would make a nice companion for the Premier.

My Gen 1 Premier currently resides on an RX8 7' MHF custom rod that was barely over $100.  I got lucky as the blank alone cost more than I paid for the rod.  As the song says, "It could happen to you."  :teeth:

Keep the reel keep the woman. Who cares about the rod! I say just use any old rod and wait for that nice gal to buy you one!!! I'm with the others, I never exchange a gift unless it's the wrong size and I make sure I get the same item. The gift is just that, a gift. Someone who cares gave it to you and they didn't need to. You're lucky buddy. Good for you!

My exact thoughts, just a better way than I would have probably said it.

Keep it. We just tell each other what we want and the other goes and gets it. Like Christmas I wanted a new mountain feist to squirrel hunt with.she wanted a m&p shield 9mm. Both happy both great gifts. Valentines day she got a dozen roses and ammo I got a new curado. Her birthday she got a deer rifle My birthday I got another curado and a pair of L.L. Bean boots.

You may start to notice a pattern when I buy her things she wants it's also something I can go play with..... Maybe she won't catch on
