Gloomis Mag Bass Imx Or St Croix Rage???

Recommended Posts

New to the forum so I hope this is in the right place. I'm trying to decide between the rods above. I can't remember the exact model numbers, but both are 7' MH with a fast tip. It will be used for a variety of applications... Frog, Carolina rig, Texas rig, jig, etc. I'd rather buy a few high quality rods than a rod for everything I ever throw. I will acquire rods slower that way, but I prefer quality over quantity. Advice, input, or other suggestions are welcomed.

There is no comparison if the rods are in equally good condition, the Loomis MBR843IMX any day of the week.

I think your comparing a $300 rod to a $150 rod?

That said, I have several Rage rods and they're good sticks

IMX is far superior. If you were comparing it to the Avid, it'd be a little closer. The Rage is made from the same material as the Avid, but they have different tapers. The build quality isn't even close between the two. I actually thought the Rage was one of the more disappointing rods St Croix has produced in some time. The handles are way too short, which makes the rods very tip heavy. They have super cheap guides that you'd find on a $30 Berkley rod. They're just an all around disappointment, which is sad considering the blanks are pretty dang nice.

Agree with the above, IMX any day of the week over a Rage.

I'm not always a Loomis fan but for the same money Id take the IMX over the Rage. As someone else said if the comparison was to an Avid it would be harder to decide, and if it was an LTB even harder. But that IMX was probably close to 2x the price of the Rage originally.

My recommendation is the G.Loomis IMX MBR 844C. This is the standard at it's pricing point.

If your want a fine rod at a much lower price consider this:  http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/pinnacle-optimus-xlt-dhc-review.html

Its tough comparing a 300 dollar and 150 dollar rods, obviously the 300 dollar rod should perform better than the 150. in the case of the IMX and the Rage the IMX will definitely perform better, now you bring in the IMX vs the Crucial, or Tatula, even the falcon bucoo micro, or the *** black, and I would pick those every day of the week vs the IMX, for the added 150-200 dollar the performance upgrade is in my opinion not enough to justify the increase in cost. The rage is not typically one of the contenders for the best 150.00 dollar range rods, its not a bad rod, it just doesn't stand out. So if it has to be between the rage and IMX i go IMX...

Thank you for the input. Upon review I could have phrased the question much better. Lol But I know which to get now. Unless there is one even better I should look at...

a g.loomis MBR843C IMX all day and all night...absolutely terrific rods that will spoil you. FWIW, with the next-generation IMX rods just coming out, you might be able to score a deal on the "old" IMXs.

American Legacy Fishing had brand spanking new old style 843 IMX's for $220.00 shipped. That's a great deal on a great rod! They may still have some left.

Well... Imx of course! Now I do have one 7'11" rage heavy... It's perfect... I looked at this rod for a year... Before I ran across a perfect rage @ 119$ I like it ok.... But Imx any day of the week, and twice on Sunday....

IMO the Loomis IMX series is the standard to what all rods are compared too and this rod started the high end market.

I agree with 21farms.

The MBR843C IMX was the first G Loomis I ever purchased.  Now I own over 40.  Be very very careful as this rod is a "gateway" rod...

Well, there is always going to be something marginally better so you have to decide what you want to spend.

I don't fish IMX anymore, my Loomis are GLX. From what I am told NRX takes it to a completely different level,

but I don't own one (yet).

"Value" is in the eye, or hands, of the beholder. I have been VERY impressed with the Pinnacle Tournament

Series at a $160 pricing point. I have two and another is on its way. There are just a lot of options to choose

from. I hope these observations and suggestions have helped.

RW, what are you waiting for?  Make the leap!  The NRX will change your life (and unfortunately, really lighten your wallet)

If you're going to spend the money for an IMX, I'd take a good hard look at the 13 *** and the Kistler Helium, or KLX. All three are superior to the IMX, in my opinion.
