I'm looking for a Texas rig/finesse jig rod I have a champion spinning rod but I can't base the power to a casting rod. should I get a 703 a lot of people say they run lite so should I step up to a 704? Mostly throw 1/4 oz maybe 3/8 oz Texas rigs. Looking at the champion series.

I have the 703 and a 734, the 703 is a versatile rod, I do not like this rod for anything over 3/8oz. it seems a bit overpowered after that. I would recommend looking at the 4 power if your bait weight will exceed 3/8oz. and prefer the 734 over the 704 for jigs and TX rigs.

Either the 704 or 734 would be ideal for trigs up to 3/8. Anything more the 735 would be a better choice. If you are throwing mostly 3/8 into any sort of cover, get the 705 or 735.

704. I use my 744dx with jigs 1/4 to 1/2 oz. I usually put the 1/2oz on my 735 but can throw them on the 744. If you're planning on 1/4 and 3/8 I'd be looking at the 704

I use my DX744 for that stuff, up to about 3/4 oz. there and heavier, the 745.

The 735 is a mh in the flipping/frog champ series. It is still an XH rod if they werent grouped differently. The xf tip on the 735 will throw 1/4oz baits better than the fast 705. I prefer to throw them on a dx744 but if i was using the champ and throwing MOSTLY 3/8, id opt for the 735 because it can and will pitch/cast 1/4. If i want the option of going a little lighter to say a 3/16 up to 3/8, id use the 734. I throw 3/16 on a dx744 as well. The 735 had a lot of beef in the backbone but the xf tip allows to throw smaller baits than you would think you can. Hope that made sense.

734 full rear grip. This is the most versatile model in the champion series for my money. It's the the one model I have multiples of. 1/4 to 1/2 is the sweet spot. The rod locks up pretty quick and for single hook applications, that's an advantage.

yep the 4 power from dobyns takes care of all your 3/8 needs.

 

 

think about it like this... this is a blanket statement but true for the most part but there is some cross over to be had but this is the breadbasket weights IMO 

 

Jigs, trigs,but not including swimjigs, as that's where much of the cross over happens.

1/4oz 3 power

3/8oz 4 power

1/2oz+ 5 power

 

I own champion series 733, 734, 735

and DX series 742, 743, 744, 745, 784

so that is my opinion on how they all rank

4 power, I personally don't like rods too heavy unless I'm in lily pads and grass. I throw 3/8 + trailer jigs on a mh. Dobyns makes great rods good luck on new purchase!
