Been going back and forth for a while now, and finally got a chance to put my hands on an Avid earlier today. Needless to say, I loved the feel and the rod balanced great, not to mention very lightweight. So I came back home and ordered a AVC70MHF from TW. Should be on it's way tomorrow. Going to use it primarily as a pitching rod, going to try wacky with it too. A revo s will be paired with it until I can get a Lew's, spooled with 20lb InvizX. One of the biggest things that sold me on the rod was the full cork handle, very comfortable and seemed to be a high quality cork.

 

Anyone else use this model Avid? If so, how do you like it? Any suggestions for keeping the cork preserved? My highest quality rod right now is a veritas, I felt like it was time to get something a little higher quality. 

 

I seem to have terrible luck with guides, I don't know if it's me or what. How are the guides on an Avid? 

Did you actually handle the MHF? Because I thought it was quite tip heavy and significantly heavier than the 7' MF. ST croix has the blank listed as a bit heavier than others similarly sized also. Not sure why.

I have a 7' MHF and I think is great.  I have not had any problems with the guides.  Its a big step up and you will be happy. I dont know that I would use it for wacky fishing but I use mine for spinnerbaits, jigs, and even som caroline rigs.

I handled a few of them but don't remember specifically anyone being tip heavy. The only significant difference I noticed was between the Avid and Premier. I've been looking at full cork rods and those were the two that I liked. Granted, once I felt the difference I decided to spend the extra for the Avid. I've been told the MHF was a good rod for pitching and senko applications. I just emailed TW to see if they could switch my rod from the MHF to the MF before they ship it out. I'm not fishing extremely heavy cover and throwing heavy baits. I like a lighter feel, didn't know croix rated their rods heavier, as I like a lighter feel. Hopefully TW can handle the situation before they ship it out. First time ordering from them so we will see. 

Thats the staple in the St Croix line-up and has been for years.

I have the same exact rod, and I really enjoy it. I use it as part of my everyday setup. Enjoy.

Agreed, for wacky I'd go to a minimum a M/F rod.  St. Croix to me anyway has a tendency to be under rated, it is between M-MH.

 

I also find Avid's being a little tip heavy but not to the point of being annoying though.  Good rod I'm sure you'll enjoy it

Good rods, they have a nice build quality and use good components.  I did not like the rod for contact baits and use it mostly for moving baits.  As others have mentioned they can feel slightly tip heavy, especially when compared to some of the higher end offerings of St. Croix.  All in all a solid rod that you will enjoy.

I have two, and paired with TD-X pitching reels, they balance out nicely. Funny, heavier reels, like a Zillion didn't feel too great. I use mine for frogs, toads, t-rigs, heavy spinner baits/buzz baits, and jigs.
