:(

Not going to say a word.

I know nothing!

I'm sure there are many different perspectives on the story and any other story associated with him.

People's heroes always seem to fall hardest.

When reading several different books & articles about the California bass boom back in the day, the completion was fierce.

Mr. Long's reputation as described by the authors of some of these publications, was often presented in a manner that was less than, lets say . . . . "likable".

His actions here will undoubtedly support the opinions of his detractors.

All I'm going to say is: wow.

Though I am at times surprised by bass, I am not surprised by the behavior of fellow men nowadays.  I deal with people in environments where power and money are involved.. and it does not bring out the best.

Any "record catch" is suspect if it is verified only by interested parties.

How could he be allowed to claim a record catch that was verified by his own photo and own unverified statement?

The only bigger dolts than Long would seem to be the dolts who allowed him to claim the record in the first place.

I don't think the fish.. In the articles photo was a record.. @16 pds. Just appears to be a smaller fish..(different ) fish from the one he says he caught... The 18 plus fish...his camera failed to capture the image. I believe I read this correctly?

Someone please correct me if I am in error....

I believe he said he did not have a photo of the "record" fish and that someone asked him for a photo for an article so he just gave them that one.

The photo shown there is ML holding a fish that John Kerr caught.

That's the rub. He's posing with another dude's fish that is not the lake record.

Yikes! Yea I need a stiffened up cup of Coffee!

I didn't think he claimed the record.... Oh boy...

What a shame....glad he came forward, but so sad that he lived all these years under a lie like that.  He and Lance Armstrong need to start up a support group.

Mike Long has become an icon in the SoCal trophy bass cicles along with Bob Crup, both have had a lot of controversy over the years and this admission of guilt does supprise me.

Long has made some money using his reputation as a trophy bass angler with seminars, signature tackle, etc. Too bad if he gave into the pressure of fame by cheating, at the end of the day truth prevails.

Tom

PS, John Kerr was Mike Long's long time fishing partner, you wonder what else will climb out of the closet.

I think Mike's body of work speaks for itself and believe in his 18 lb catch. After all...

It's also amazing to me that he holds many other so called lake records.... Are they legit?

  • Super User

Omg, someone actually lied about the size of fish they caught?

Some nerve!

It's unfortunate...I'll just shake my head and move on.

shameful, but can't help but agree i'ts crazy the fact they allowed this unsubstantiated claim to be the record to begin with.....

There are a couple different opinions on this topic. I've followed Mike on facebook for some time, he had a status up last night explaining his side of this (not just the writers out there bashing him), but has since taken it down. I believe he may be seeking legal action in regards to this matter because these writers are slandering his name with untruthful information.

Just remember there are two sides to every story, make sure you hear them both before passing judgement.

Just remember there are two sides to every story

Sometimes there are 3 or more sides to a story.

However, Mike admitted to falsification so there might only be one side to this story.

Cheating is cheating: you can't justify it and you can't explain it away.

I'll agree that I think this is cheating, and furthermore I will say that I have read more into this story and now believe that he definitely deserves whatever punishment comes his way if what is being said is true. You can't just take someone else's fish (which wasn't the record) and claim it's your own.

Footnote: In addition to the reading on this subject matter I came across articles that he has killed some of his trophy catches which I wasn't previously aware of and definitely don't support. Conservation is key in this sport and in order to pass on our resources, specifically the species of bass and trophy bass for future generations we need to ensure the survival of giant SM and LM. Pretty ticked of reading about this.

"You caught an 18 pounder?"

"yes"

"Any witnesses?"

"no"

"got a picture?"

"no"

"Sounds legit to me! Here's your record!"

no matter what the story, a record needs documentation.

He should've posted on BR with the other infamous titled threads "how much does this weigh?"
