Line Recommendation

Featured Replies

I'm currently running two rods.  1 baitcaster (7' MH F) and 1 spinning reel(7' M F).  I am curious what type and pound line I should be using?  If braid let me know the pound braid and type and weight of the leader.  And if you could add a 3rd setup what would it be?

Any info would be helpful

Those 2 setups seem to probably cover a good range of the lure weights..

I'd prefer a slightly  longer rod for the caster but 7' is good

I like braid and fluoro on the caster

but like mono on the spinning setup

pound weights depend on your application..

Baitcasting: Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12

Spinning:  Hybrid #6

For me it would be 40 lb power pro on the mh and 15 or 20 lb pp on the m.

Leaders if used at all would vary depending on the type of fishing.

^^^^ Exactly what he said ^^^^

10-15lb braid on the spinning, 15-20lb flouro on the casting rod. If I could add a 3rd setup, it would be a 7' Medium, moderate action rod with a 5.4:1 casting reel and 12 lb flouro for all of your crankbaits.

I'm a fan of heavier braids (30# test) on baitcasters, but the spinning rig would perform very well with 10# PowerPro. In both cases, you probably should think about a fluorocarbon leader as well. However, line selection on either of these rigs should be predicated upon the type of fishing you are doing and the terrain you are fishing in.

12# or 14#  mono or floro on the MH Baitcaster, 10# braid on the spinner.  If I was to add another rig it would be another baitcaster.  If I used a crankbait a lot make it a mod. actionbut I'd be more apt to make it a short 6" caster for topwaters and spinnerbaits.

There aren't many lines or many leaders that I haven't used in the past,

but today I use Berkley 30-lb Trilene Braid for both spinning & casting (no leader, not even in gin clear water)

Hi Jassch82,

You can see you are getting all kinds of answers based on personal preference.  I don't think we can offer any suggestions with out knowing where you are fishing and what kind of water, (clear, dark, colored).  Are you fishing rocks or grass?  Your fishing conditions and location has a lot to do with the line and rods you need.

I can say that when I was fishing 10lb PP braid on a spinner I had a problem with the line fowling the rod tip.  That went away when I switched to 20lb PP.

Good point Frank.

I've used 20-lb braid for several seasons and liked it a lot. Eventually I tried 30-lb braid and found it virtually eliminates wind-knots,

totally eliminates line-burrowing and is more abrasion-resistant. The difference in line diameter is two thousandths of an inch

Spinning - 15lb Braid - 6-10 leaders as you feel necessary.

Baitcaster - 15lb FC is a decent all around size.

Thank you for all of your answers.

My spinning setup is mainly used for finesse. Drop shot and wacky

My baitcaster is a all around rod.  Jigs, frogs, t-rig,

I mainly fish clear to stained water.  And the water mainly has a sandy bottom.  There is times when there is grass and rocks.

I'm leaning toward 10-15# PP with a 8# F leader for the spinning setup.

And I'm currently running 15# copolymer on the baitcaster.

Hope this will help with more suggestions.

As far as line goes, you're set up nicely.

Hi Jassch82,

Braid really works well on a spinner but I find a leader is more trouble than it is worth.  Twenty pound braid is the equivalent to 6 pound mono so I would consider 15 or 20 pound braid.  If you are fishing clear water a lot then why not go straight fluro with mono backing.  Six or 8 pound Tatsu should work fine on a spinning reel.  The lighter the fluro the better the performance.  The problem I have with light weight mono or fluro is you have to keep retying all the time.  It is much less of a problem with braid unless you are fishing a lot of sharp rocks.
