Recommended Line And Lb. Test For Spinning Reel

Featured Replies

I recently purchased the Shakespeare GX2 spinning combo (6.6ft, medium) set as a starter combo. What type of line and lb. test should I put on it for LM bass fishing?

It should tell you right on the combo. That is where I would start. Or at least it will tell you the length of line and lbs.

the rod will tell you the line and lure weights its designed for.. go beyond that and you will lose out on casting performance

i looked up his rod on the shakespeare website, it says 6-15lb test line and 1/8-5/8oz lures.. for bass 10-12lb test should be good then with any of those lure weights

It depends on what you plan on using it for.

I agree with Tank.  Go lighter and go the hybrid route to start.   I like Yo-Zuri a lot.  I also like P-Line.   I especially like P-line with the $7 rebate through this month when you buy two spools - makes it basically BOGO.

for ease and to start with, i would go with 8lb mono.  Berkley XL or Suffix Elite.

both are good lines with little memory and very affordable.

imo anything heavier than 8lb is going to coil and give you fits if you are just beginning.

that should get you started and many people stay with one of those lines ...

6lb Yozuri Hybrid

X2

Start with 6lb or 8lb Stren mono. Stren is what I've used for many years and still use today. Very easy to use and breaking off is pretty rare.

I used Stren for a long time, also.  I never realized how bad the memory was messing with me until I switched to hybrid.  What little Stren I have left is relegated to leader material.

I've started using seaguar red label fc in 8#. Love the line and the strength but hate the memory of it.

I have Stren Mono on just about everything now.  The memory isn't that bad, as long as you don't go too heavy.

When it comes to mono or copoly on spinning reel I'm paying a bit more attention to line diameter than the labeled pound test.  I'm not going to recommend one line over another, that's up to each individual to choose.  I'd probably start with a reference point of 8# test, trilene xl .010, yozuri.011, Spider wire ultra .009.  If I went with the Yozuri I'd probably opt for 6#, I'm sure it's a good line as the others are too.

^ This.. Big Time. Every line manufacturer has their own LB. rating, and most are inaccurate. I use P-Line Flouroclear and CX in 10-12 lb on my Medium action spin rods. My MH spin rod uses 15 lb. CX. That works fine for that line. Put 12 lb. Yo-zuri hybrid on and it will never work. The 12 lb. Yo-zuri has a much thicker diameter than either 12 lb. P-lines I listed, so line management will be a huge issue.
