Culling Technique ?

Featured Replies

There are a few ways to cull fish. Some put their fish immediately in the livewell right after catching there fish with no tag. They choose to do that later. To me it makes sense to weight the fish, tag it, record the weight then put it in the live well.  Then you know right away which fish is the first to cull?

Also, I don't like poking a hole in the fish of the tag, I use the clip on type which are the greatest. Does putting hole in the fish for the tag okay to do?

I tag em immediately, its the best way to get ahold of the right fish in a timely fashion. Reach in, grab a color, nope thats not him, must of been the red one. If I know one is more likely to cull then the others I try to label him/her green that way green=go.

I catch my 5 bass limit while tagging each one. As I catch them I eyeball the smallest and remember the color tag it is on. When I begin culling I measure against that smallest. If I am fortunate to cull often I reach for my culling beam to make sure.

Yelp!

While y'all are weighing & tagging I'll be catching!

If ya caught one don't ya think repeated casts to the same target would be smart?

I use the Ardent culling balls, I don't take the time to actually weigh each fish but will estimate a length and put that length on each ball. when its time to cull just look for the lowest two numbers (if the smallest two are close its better to doublecheck) to compare against the newly caught fish. I am not a fan of putting them in the livewell without the culling system because it gets hard to grab them later, and multiple times I have seen guys lose fish because while they were messing with getting a fish out one jumped out and ended up back in the water.

I'm with Catt, sometimes you don't have time to deal with all that. You get a spot of breaking fish...go ahead and tag them....I'll worry about it after I have my 5 fish in the livewell and spend 5 min figuring out which one needs to go after I get to that point.

I weigh and tag as i go...i do like to keep my bigger fish inone welk and smaller fish the other

If i am catching fish in rapid sucession i usually tag later but i still separate the bigger fish from the smaller ones

cull???? i've not had that problem this year.  I've caught 10 fish since june lol

I tag immediately and start culling at 1 p.m

I'm not weighing, fish hits the board if close, tag in, livewell. Its about three extra seconds. If you're going back through trying to decide who to tag and who to cull the lost time is much greater. Good luck grabbing that free swimming smallie Lol.

I use the colored ball tags and just put in a tag then toss them in the livewell. Darker colored tags for bigger fish and lighter colors for smaller ones in general. Once I get 5 I worry about culling but fishing has been so tough this year it hasn't happened.

If y'all look at slonezp's link it's of a balance beam!

Quicker than weighing em

I've seen enough bass to pretty much tell which is small & the balance beam confirms it.

They will be weighed at the weigh-in ;)

confused2.gif I'm confused. Do you only catch 5 keepers before 1 and the rest afterwards?

Not only quicker but more accurate. I haven't yet found a digital scale that is consistent and/or accurate
