Rod Suggestions

Featured Replies

Looking for a higher end rod, used for the following:

Weightless to 1/4oz Bullet weight - Senko, brush hogs, kreature, beavers, etc

Weightless To 1/4oz Swim bait hook - impact FAT mostly and other soft paddle tail

Various plastics behind different jig heads up to 1/4oz

Possibly up to 3/8oz if that wide of a range can be had.

Looking at G Loomis, Dobyns, or St Croix. Spinning or Baitcasting.

thanks for any input.

I would use a M to a MH try Abu Garcia Veritas or Vendetta

I think the champion 733c would be perfect for what you want to use it for

Out of those 3 on the higher end it would most likely be personal preference. My preference would be a higher end stcroix spinning rod in a 7 foot medium power.

Weightless to 1/4oz Bullet weight - Senko, brush hogs, kreature, beavers, etc

St croix 6'8" mxf I'm whichever line you want

My dobyns dx743 fits all of those weights and techniques very well.

I am hoping the NRX803C that I just ordered will do everything that you mentioned.

I really like the NRX 803 and 853 . 3/8 oz. is about right in the sweet spot for them but I have no problem fishing a 1/2 oz jig and trailer with either... If you like the extra length go with the 893..

I would have to suggest a St. Croix Legend Tournament or Xtreme with a medium power and fast action for those techniques/weights. They make a few in a couple different lengths, but make that decision based on what you're most comfortable with. I would think would do just fine with a baitcaster for those techniques too.

St croix avid or dobyns champion 704 were the ones I was looking at.

I have the BCR893, the NRX893 is a great choice!

Dx 743c or 744c, probably the 743.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I have some research to do.

My goal is to start and try to figure out the next couple rods I want to buy and keep a look out for them in the market place and similar places.

The St. Croix rods with a SCIII blank or higher are incredibly sensitive. I have Premier series that I like, but the jump in blanks when I picked up a Rage was unbelievable. The SCIII blank in the Rage, Avid and Avid X series rods are super sensitive, light and have a shitload of backbone for $160-$220.

My preference for those techniques is a baitcasting rod, 7' MHF to about 7'3" MHF.  Of the rods you mentioned, I have St Croix SCV's and really like them.  I imagine you would be very happy with St. Croix SCIII and up, Gloomis IMX and up or Dobyns Champion or Champ Extreme.  Try to handle some in the store and pick what feels best to you.

So I just wanted to update and say that while I wasn't planning buying a rod this soon I found a deal on another forum I just couldn't pass up.  I ending up buying a practically brand new NRX 893C.  She hasn't been put to work yet - but soon enough.  I think I am going to pair her with a Core 50MG7.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I like it when people that ask for suggestions give updates on what they decided.

Very nice!

All those techniques scream G Loomis GLX 893C JWR or if you want to die and goto Heaven, a G Loomis NRX 893C JWR.

I have the GLX BCR893C which is probably very comparable. If you decide to go with a spinning rod, mine is

a St. Croix LES70MF.

That sounds like a killer combo.  Let us know how you like it.
