If You Had 7 Rods - What Would Be Tied On Each?

Featured Replies

I'm building an arsenal of 7 Dobyn's rods and I plan to throw ONLY the baits tied on each rod. No more cutting/tying different lures.

My plan is the following:

  1. Spinnerbait
  2. Swim jig
  3. Topwater
  4. Worm
  5. Jig
  6. Shallow crank
  7. Deep crank

What would you do differently?

Oh, I only fish 2 lakes (Neely Henry on the Coosa River and Guntersville on the TN river).

Thanks!

I typically go out with 6 rods, but don't always have the same categories all the time.  For example, in the summer on my home lake, I go with:

  1. T-Rig with 1/8 weight;
  2. Wacky rigged senko (weightless);
  3. Jig with craw trailer (heavier, 1/2 oz usually);
  4. Topwater;
  5. Small swimbait;
  6. Deep diving crankbait.

However in the winter, it is more along the lines of:

  1. Big Jig
  2. Small jig
  3. Jerkbait
  4. Drop Shot
  5. Wacky rigged Senko
  6. Crankbait (conditions determine deep or medium).

In fact, nearly every week I go out, 3 or 4 of the rods have something that was on the previous week (that worked) and 2 or 3 of the rods have something different on based on the changing conditions.  I don't think I have ever gone out 2 weeks in a row starting with the same combinations.

Bingo. There are some days when you're going to want two different kinds of soft plastics, or two different cranks of the same size but with different color/action ready to go. The thought of no re-tieing, as glorious as it sounds, is impossible without keeping a dozen rods on the boat.

1.  D-Bomb Green pumpkin red with 3/8 black tungsten weight on 10lb flurocarbon

2.  6in roboworm hologram shad with 1/4 oz skinny tungsten weight drop shot on 6lb fluoro

3.  prop bait gill or shad color on 12lb mono

4.  alabama rig 5 arm , 4 or 8 blades  on 20 lb mono or braid

5. megastrike shakey head with d-bomb super bug on 8lb fluro

6.  carolina rigged waveworm tiki craw  on 12lb fluro

I had a similar plan rigging for this weekend at Pickwick. However, plans change

and adjustments have to be made depending on conditions. I let these guys pre-

fish for me: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_123/bfl-pickwick-101314.html

As a result my set-ups have changed.

1. Cavitron Black on Black

2. Seibert Outdoors Cosmic Spinnerbait & MegaStrike StrikeBack  White

3. Bluebasser86  Bladed Jig   White/ White Rage Structure Bug

4. Rage Structure Bug  Jika Rig

5. GYCB Kut Tail on a Megastrike ShakE2 Professional Series.

6.  Norman Fat Boy & Lucky Craft RC2.5

What I tie on at home usually gets changed as soon as I start fishing and sometimes at the ramp.  I always have two texas rigs, jerkbait, spinnerbait, single 4/0 hook for flukes/senkos/frogs, topwater, two crankbaits and I keep an Arig rod setup.  Well thats eight but you get my drift.

If I had 7 rods I'd probably head out with these rigged up.

1. Tube

2. Shallow square bill

3. Deep Crank

4. Drop Shot setup

5. Senko weightless

6. Weighted plastic

7. Jig

Guttersville.....where is the frog and the punch rod.....?

I normally carry 5-7 rods any time I go fishing just incase so here's my list.

Flip/punch rod (3/4 tungsten flip weight or punch jig with a 4" DB Craw)

Frog

Buzzbait

Bladebait/swimjig

Swimbait (3 to 4oz swimbaits)

Dropshot

Umbrella Rig

Biffle Bug/ SK Structure swing jig

Of course this list will change as the weather changes but those are almost always tied on.  But do swap out and fish squarebills, spinnerbaits, deep cranks, senko's/Ika's, and jerkbaits.  Hmmmm, now I know why I have more then 7 rods at home and always looking for more.

7 different rods...3 spinning rods, 1 with a 1/8 oz wacky jig, 1 with a 1/16 oz wacky jig and 1 with a  2/0 wacky hook.  2 jig rods, 1 cranking rod and 1 spinnerbait/worm rod.

My 7 combos vary from tournament to tournament but if I had to put an "all star" lineup that I can use anywhere here is what it would be.  These are my confidence baits

I decided that I am only fishing 6 Rods max this year, but I like 7 and is usually what I bring for most Florida lakes, especially the Orlando lakes which can drive you nuts and make you question your tackle.....

5 Baitcasting rods

flipping stick with Rodent black and blue, gp/red

weightless or nail weighted Caffeine Shad style fluke, gp,water red,bluegill or shad patterns.

Large 6-7" Senko for walking near surface-Junebug or Houdini with UV glow on 7"

1/2 ounce chrome black red eye shad or gold sebile flatt shad su 77 if over grass

Bomber long a or Red Fin usually #15 floating long a.....maybe frog

2 spinning rods I am using more and more lately and going lighter...

1/4 Brewer slider weedless jighead and 6" gp finesse worm

5" or 6" pro senko nail weighted wacky.

Starting to like the OCHO lately...Why is this not a bait guys talk about? Offers alot of innovation compared to a Senko-Flat sides add flash, and this worm is killer on a punch rig or walking in a baby bass color...Loving me some Caffeine Shads and Ochos lately...Still grab the Rodent before the Bug,  and GYB gets nod for most sticks due to color, bps as well.....I would adjust color based on the time on water before and forrage.

Why stop at 7?   If your goal is to avoid wasting time on the watery avoiding retying unless necessary,  bring a dozen, 15, 18, however many you can reasonably afford without tripping over them.   Me, I bring a dozen - minimum and sometimes 18 or 20.  I probably won't use them all on any given day, but knowing that they are there gives me confidence that I have many options.
