A Rig Setup

What setup do you guys fish A Rigs on? I was wondering if I could get away w/throwing it on my Fliping/Pitching/Frogging Setup (7'6" Heavy Berkley Lightning Ros Shock, 7.1:1 Lew's Reel, and #50 spiderwire braid)? The reel seems fast, but could I slow down the retrieve enough to make it work? Also, should I fish w/a Fluorocarbon leader?

I fish a 20lb P-Line CXX mono leader with 30lb braid on mine with a 7'6"MH BPS Crankin rod and a 5:4 Carbonlite reel.  But used a 7'6"MH Bionic Blade before that with a 6:4 Extreme and did okay.  Dropped to a lower gear ratio as it was easier to crank on all day and went to a softer rod to prevent pulling hooks.

So i would be ok w/a lighter rod? I would like to fish a lighter rod if I could.

I wouldn't.  It's five weighted swimbait hooks on a weighted rig.  Usually works out to about 2-4 oz.  If you want to use a lighter rod, use a lighter rig.  Picasso makes a nice Jr. rig with a hard foam head.  I usually rig it with 2" boot tail grubs on little ball head jigs.

A lot depends on what size heads and baits you're going to throw as well as which A-rig.  I mainly use the Flashmob Jr, Eco Tungsten's Roll Tide Rig, and Yellow Hammer's Spinner Bait Rig with 1/8oz heads and 3-4 inch swing impacts.  Go up to a 3/16 at most so I guess mine would be a lighter A-rig.  But you just have to manage the baits and head size to the rod you're wanting to use.  If you're going big, then yes, you're going to need a bigger set up to handle it.

Match the rod to the total weight of the rig just like any other bait. There are as many variations on the A rig as there are on all the other rigs. A three arm rig with 1/8 oz jig heads and 3" trailers can be fished on a rod that would be overwhelmed by 5, 1/4oz heads with 5" plastics etc.

You beat me to it Captain

On the 5 wire I want as long and heavy a rod as I can comfortably handle. I use a 7' 11'' x heavy swimbait rod.  I personally don't care for braid so I use 25lb mono. I like to slow roll the rig deep and use 1/4 oz. heads even on the teasers .

I use a 7' 10" XH/F custom built swimbait rod with a 300E Curado spooled with 25lb copolymer for my A rigs. I've used a flipping stick and it does work but I wouldn't want to have to use it a lot.

Ok. So my last question is w/leaders. If I am fishing braid w/the rig do I need it? I'm worried about knots breaking and losing about $20 worth of terminal when I do....

Why would you need a leader?  I don't use one.
