Breaking In A New Rod & New Pb! In December?

So with it December in Kansas we don't see lots of big Largemouth. In fact it's almost down to one one of 2 local powerplants if you want to have a decent day at all and then the Wipers are generaly the best thing going. The wiper are nice because 1 they get big & 2 they school and if you catch one you can sometimes catch several more on consecutive casts. Anyhow I'd just got a new rod to go chase Wiper with. I needed something fairly stiff but not crazy expensive because I dont think it will get used most of the year. I ended up with a MH Duckett rod and I put my 100 size Speed spin on and was chucking a 4" swimbait.

So long story short, I get bit and bring the fish to the surface next to the boat and see its a Largemouth and a big one! It immediately dives back down and goes under a steel cable. At this point I'm thinking no way will I get that fish in the boat but then it turns around and swims back from under the cable and I was able to quickly get her in the net.

I was by myself and wanted to find someone to take my pic but I didn't want to leave the hot water outlet and take a chance killing the fish by releasing it in colder water. I settled for a couple videos weighing it and snapped a couple pics and sent her back on her merry way.

Congrats on the new PB! Heck of a fish. Way to document it with a scale and release all on video!

To help put it in perspective, our state record is only 11.88 pounds and was caught several years ago out of a private strip pit. The fish before that was 11.75 pounds and that record stood for almost 40 years! Our bass just don't get very big here. I'm still looking for one over 8 in KS!

Oh and what a sweet way to break your new rig in!!

cool

Clayton,it was nice of you to let Curt catch a green fish out of that lake, instead of Flatheads. Lol

Great new PB. Congratulations.

I would have bet the bank it was a jig fish! lolol

Then you would have lost because the only thing Curt catches out of LaCygne with jigs is flat heads and the steel cables .  That being said, I would gladly catch a one of his flatheads from that lake!

WOW - That's awesome man!

Wow - great catch.  Congrats.
