I just picked up a nice custom painted (by calfish) zillion 50th anniversary.  It is beautiful, maybe too nice lol.  I'm afraid to fish it and get a scratch.   I originally intended on putting it on my perfect pitch xx for jigs and frogs, but now I have trepidations after seeing it in person.  What would you guys do?  Fish it or shelf it?

I don't care how nice a reel is. It's meant to be fished. Unless it's some super rare gem but in that case I probably couldn't afford it anyhow. You can always have it repainted if it gets scratched up. Just my .02

I'm about to get into that realm of gears too. Looking very hard at some limited edition JDM reels after Christmas. I would treat it like a classic car. Meant to be driven but not daily driven. Taking it out and taking extra care of it. Always have a reel cover on it when not in use. IMO the only reels that would be shelf queens are extremely rare reels that is extremely hard to find and sought after. Otherwise a tricked reel is meant to be used but used accordingly.

Treat it well, and you should be fine. I wouldn't put braid on it though xD.

I just hate how braid coloring can rub off on the spool, it takes forever to get it off with Q-tips.

I know guys with custom cars and motorcycles that get towed around in a trailer,  and others that run the wheels off stuff. When it comes to enthusiasts it's "to each his own". 

You guys are right. I'll just be extra careful. It's not a rare reel, but the paint job is so nice that I'd hate to see it get scratched.

Buy a TW or similar reel cover for it. Leave it in the reel cover when you arent fishing it. This what I do with all my nice reels.

It´s not some rare limited time, limited offer hard to get one of a kind reel like for example a TD AOI ( 200 righties and 200 lefties manufactured ) or a TDZ custom ( GR and color chosen by you ) or a Megabass Monoblock Bespoke or a Megabass Zonda Rosso.

 

You may love it to death , you can take an ordinary reel, have it painted, added some aftermaket parts, may look cool but it´s nothing really special and it´s value is the cost of the reel plus the paint plus the parts.

And even this is debatable. A $500 car with a $1500 stereo is still a $500 car.
