I'm with you. By design I'm a model or two behind at least. There'd have to be a real game changer innovation for me to purchase the newest model of most anything.

I actually look forward to new stuff coming out so I can take advantage of the clearances.

That's a personal thing.

I just replace equipment if it offers something that I want. not because it is new.

I've found myself slide down that slippery slope. What ends up happening is a horde of unused gear. I'm trying to tame myself but old habits die hard.

X2. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have stuff I like, so I use it. I really like an old ProCaster... I still use it. I'll probably upgrade it soon, but I just like it.

I think every hobby/sport has those kinds of folks. It's a matter of preference until it becomes a point of "status"

I ride in a road cycling club here in Central IN. There are always those couple of guys who've always got the latest $15K race Tour De France bike. One or two of them don't make much fuss about it, they just enjoy the technical aspect of having the newest technology available.

But then a couple of the will flat out look down their nose at you because your ride is 3yrs old and only cost $8K....yes...that's a thing. Those kinds are irritating. I love it when us "inferior" riders put em' in their place.

Am I a bit jealous?....probably....but I'm satisfied....LOL until I see my fishing buddy with a new Curado I....me with a G.....then I might have to get one and ask forgivness from the wife later.

Sorry I was busy upgrading my phone from the one I got last week.....j/k  If your electronics are already top of the line when you bought them last year and are just upgrading to upgrade is a bit over the top. If that's the reason, well you're going to need to upgrade before the end of summer because your unit will be obsolete again.  Just like computers, electronics are always being upgraded to something newer.  If you chase the shinny bells and whistles you're spending money just to spend it.  But if that's what you want to do then by all means understand your doing it because you want the shinny new unit . But If you're upgrading to a nicer unit from years of fishing with a basic unit and haven't had one with that can do what the newer units can then your upgrade is an improvement.  I basically believe if you're going to buy electronics for a boat, buy what you want the first time and fish it, and learn it.  You will get more fishing time using a unit you know then spending that time trying to figure out that new one you just bought.  But your choice.  I'm not one that will stand in line each year for a new Iphone just because, but there are those that will.  Doesn't matter what it is, some people want the new stuff just to have it.

I use it till its snaps!!!!!:)

Finances don't allow it right now, but I want  one of those Hummingbird 360 depth finders.   If I fished bigger lakes more, I would have the largest screen GPS available.  Driving down the lake, a big screen is easier to follow than a smaller screen is.

im with those who look for the deals on the previous models. tho ill likely splurge on a new model rod and reel or two this season

I usually use something until it is worn out and not worth fixing any longer. I keep up on what is out there and the new technology, but I don't run out to buy the latest thing.

Two of my rods in deck are 12 years old...one has a 12 year old calcutta on it...the other a curado i lol

I get what i want when i want it...my newest reels are a stradic ci4+ and a chronarch 51e that i got last month

I dont need the latest and greatest to be effective...

It depends on what it is, how serious you are and how out of date your's is.   With some things, it is worth upgrading.  For example, updating your electronics to models with GPS, Side and Down scan and a bigger screen is worth the money (to me.)  Other things, like rods and reels, probably isn't worth it if yours are in good working condition.

I use to sample different reels and ended up selling them all off because they didn't quite do it for me. My next purchases were all reels I had full intent on keeping. They will be with me till they die. They fit my hand and style of Fishing the best, plus they're all great performers. When the new kid on the block comes around I usually wait a bit looking for some feedback before acquiring one. So in short I won't sell my current reels to get the latest and greatest, but if it's something I know I have to have its coming g home with me. Daiwa Alphas SV will be the 1st reel I buy with limited to none reviews available. I think it's gonna be a winner and I must have one to add to the collection.

I was thinking of an answer to your question Cy, but think this really is the best one.

I love new models coming out. It means the stuff I've had my eye on cam now be bought at a discount.

I don't care about status or what others think. When I buy a new reel, it's because I want it. Maybe it's the looks, features, improvements, or whatever; but there's a reason I want it.

I say whatever you like. Some people will use gear until it doesn't work and isn't worth fixing, and some like me will try to stick with fairly new gear 1-2 years old.

My wife and I both grew up without money, and without luxuries. "We grew up in different homes, yes we do live in Tennessee" :eyebrows: Just kidding

We both went to college and got degrees, we busted our butts to get where we are. We both have good careers, and neither of us have kids. Fishing gear is something we like to stay on top of with the newest gear, newest techniques, lines, kayaks, and paddles.

Our vehicles on the other hand are good vehicles and we tend to buy new, but keep many years after being paid off like my 03' truck, and 05' car. I do all my own maintenance on vehicles, and home so we find ways to save money.

I don't look down on anyone, I don't care what you use, or how much or how little it costs, all I care is that you are enjoying what you do. I say stay within a budget, and don't put your family at risk, and just enjoy being outdoors and on the water or bank whatever you prefer.

Agreed. What I need and what I want, live in two different neighborhoods.

You should allocate your money based on what gives you the most "utility". Having really nice fishing stuffs gives me a lot of "utility" :)

The only reason that curado i is on the one rod is because my johnny morris rick clunn reel died after 11 years of service lol

And i plan on getting that reel fixed so i can return it to duty!
