Beaver Baits

Featured Replies

I've been fishing mostly with Sweet Beaver and Pitt boss and I'm still trying to figure out which one I like more. One thing I've noticed is that they have different action in water: beaver glides nice without much action; Pitt boss tail has a lot more action movement. So which one do you prefer?

Also, I've been having problem loosing too many fish this year. I've always used 3/0 or 4/0 EWG hooks. But I'm thinking maybe it's time to try different hook for the beaver... Maybe round band offset, or straight shank flipping hook? I'm mostly fishing sparse cover with MH rods and #30 braid.

I like the Pit Boss better. Why? They're cheaper..

Pit bosses are a bit cheaper, hold a hook a little better, and for whatever reason, seem to skip better. The appendages don't hold up too well though, and they don't have as many or as cool of colors as RI beavers. For me it's whichever one I'm into at the time. Right now I'm into the pit boss.

Dbomb > Beaver > pit poss for me personally.

What ewg hook are you using. I use the beavers with mustad ultra point mega bite ewg 3/0 & 4/0 hooks with a remarkably high hook up ratio. Perfect hook to skin hook beavers/put boss/d bombs etc. I thought about using some straight shank hooks but at this point don't see the need yet.

I use both and a few others.

I agree with this order. D-Bomb's are fantastic. Although I've been trying to find ways to use the Pit Boss more and more lately.

Find that I use the pit boss more as a jig trailer and the sweet beaver more when punching. I like the sweet beaver colors better.

SK Rodents for me, I just love how soft they are.

This is what I use the Pit Boss for mostly. It's a pretty good bait for that. Sometimes it's just the right mix of action and bulk.

I only tie on a Beaver for punching or pitching in very heavy slop.

The RI Sweet Beaver is the only one I use.

I've been using Gamakatsu EWG 3/0 or 4/0.  It may be just bad luck, but after you loose few good fish you begin to wonder.

I do agree that the arms on the Pit Boss seem to come off pretty easily. And I also prefer D-Bomb over the Pit Boss as well. However, both work great and are fairly cheap.

I like the rage bug myself.

I love the RI Beaver. I have yet to catch a fish on the Pot Boss, D Bomb, or the Structure Bug.

I replaced all my Reaction Innovations beavers with Pit Boss's and haven't looked back. #1, they are cheaper and catch just as many and as quality of fish for me. And #2, when my kids are playing around with my stuff I don't have to try to explain what a "dirty sanchez" or "tramp stamp" is. I am not Mr.Morality, but fishing tackle is one place that I can do without lewd sexual innuendo, and drug references around 6+10 year old kids.

As for rigging the Pit Boss's, the skies the limit. My most used method is on a t-rig with a VMC 5/0 ewg heavy duty hook, with anywhere from a 1/4-1oz.tungsten sinker pegged to the nose,or as a jig trailer. I use the Pit Boss Jr.often as well, also t-rigged (3/0 ewg hook),as a jig trailer, and I drop shot it quite a bit.
