3 Casting Reel Arsenal?

Recommended Posts

Fellas, aside from my spinning outfit that I use for light/finesse applications, I'd like to make a 3 rod setup to cover as many options as possible. What are your recommendations to make 3 different casting rods/reels the most versatile?

When I´m limited to the amount of setups I can carry ( other than the foot patrol ) all I "need" is:

1 Spinning M rod paired to a 2000-2500 size reel ( Daiwa/Shimano reel sizes )

1 MH trigger rod paired to a 5:1 gear ratio BC reel ( ex: lipped cranks, slow rolling spinnerbaits, jitterbugging )

1 H trigger rod paired to a 6.2 or higher gear ratio BC reel ( ex: worms, jigs )

With those three I can fish most baits, most of the times.

My 3 casting

7' M XF

7' MH F to XF

7' M M

All with 6:x:1 reels

That should cover just about anything ... maybe not 100% ideal for one technique vs. another BUT it should work for most if not all.

With the exception of deep cranking (18'>) where a 5:1 is benficial, 6.4 or 7:1 will both work and are a matter of personal preference.

Just 3 is tough.  Definitely would want my 6'10" MF Smallmouth.  Curado 51E currently resides on it, but if limited to only 3 rods, I think the Shimano would be traded out for a supertuned Purple Alphas with 6.8:1 gears.  This rod also works well for the shallow crankbaits I often throw.  I'm awful tempted to include my new Tatula 7'2" MHR, but haven't used it enough yet to know how versatile it might be.  Not picking this rod changes my other choices.  Sooooo I guess my second choice would be the Aetos 7' MHF although the Powell Endurance 7'2" MH-XF is a close second.  Almost forgot about my 7' MHF Rainshadow.  Would be a tough choice between those three.  A reel for the 2nd rod is even tougher to pick.  Love the Chronarch 100B, Curado 201E7, Primmus, Tatula Type R, Patriarch XT and several others.

Third choice is tougher for me.  Locally a 2nd MHF might make the cut although I sure enjoy using my 6'10" HF Superlite.  This rod would carry a Zillion 50th Anniversary 7.1:1 ratio.  I hope to eventually retire near my in-laws in Florida.  There I would pick my Zillion 7'6" HF for the 3rd rod....still with the Zillion 50th.

My three main casting setups.....

6'8 MH x-fast Jig and Worm Rod (G. Loomis 803 GLX) with a Shimano Chronarch 51e

7 Shimano Crucial Crankbait Rod MH Mod-Fast with a Shimano Cruado 201G6

7 Heavy G Loomis 844C IMX with a Daiwa Zillion

My all purpose (if I'm only taking one setup) > G. Loomis 783C MH Fast GLX with a Shimano Core.  This set up can do just about anything.

I can do it with 2 im very proficient with 2 casting rods and can do all i need.i dont use swimbaits or deep divers.so that leaves me with a rod for t rigs and wakebaits.sinnce i have 3 choices i guess id use the smallest castkng reel i have with a small rod which ji have already.its more a fun setup really .with that being said i can do it all with 2 .having a 3rd would be unessecary.with that bein said i do have 30 combos and about 25 are 4600 size abus matched to pistol grip and short handled rods from 5'6" to 6' light action to heavy fiberglass to graphitte.im set the rest of my combos are saltwater and feeshwater spinning rods.
