I fish the Tchefuncte River which is a lot of wood on the bank and the fish are always close to the bank. My tackle box consists of 1 pack of 3/0 EWG hooks, 1 pack of watermelon trick worms for clear water, 1 pack of Red Shad ribbon tail worms for stained water, 1 bag of 1/4 oz tungsten sinkers. I feel as if a bass will never turn down a slender, tantalizing worm. Is this too simple though? Am I missing out on fish that may hit something else or does a Texas Rig worm always get the most fish? Thanks!!

You need a few moving baits (spinners, crankbaits, spoons) and maybe a topwater (popper, walking bait) in order to cover the entire water column.

The #1 lure is Texas Rigged plastic!

You need to add #2; a Jig-n-Craw!

You must have that rare immunity to the bait monkey.

I've fished the Tchefuncte back in the '80s.  I did alright throwing pretty much the same thing you did, except watermelon finesse worms weren't in vogue then.

 

Throw in a Humdinger and a WobbleHead and you'll have the same lineup I used.

 

If I went back there today (and if conditions were the same) I'd try a buzzbait and maybe a weedless walk-the-dog type lure as well.

An old man showed me once that bass will almost never turn down a worm, even when some are busting shad on the surface. But you can catch fish faster with hard lures when they'll chase them. I have fished a river like you're talking about mostly with a crankbait and caught them well every time there. I even caught a striper on a Rebel Wee Craw.

I'd say get some square bills for sure! Bounce them off the wood!
