Getting A New Jig Only Reel

Featured Replies

Sup guys!

So yesterday was my bday and between the wife and my mom have some cash specifically for fishing :D

I've been using a Scorpion 1001XT but the 6:1 is driving me nuts I've had violent strikes but by the time I reel down to set the hook the fish already spit it. Not often but it's happened. So I've been determined to get the fastest reel I can get. I'll be pitching and random short roll casts so line capacity is least of my concerns.

I've been dead set on the metanium XG. But now I'm seeing this Zillion in 9:1 looks like the IPT on the Daiwa is almost 4inches more with a full spool. But here's a drawback the one I would buy is mag sealed and to my knowledge only Daiwa can service it but I contacted Daiwa of America and they said won't service the JDM models. Same thing with Shimano but I can work on my own Shimanos.

Am I better off just sticking with the Met? I would over time eventually buy a Zillion to try it out.

It's going on a 7'1" MH/XF *** and 12# Sniper or Assassin will be the line.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

There is a metanium 101XG that just showed up in the fishing flea market for sale at a great price  :angel500:

Find a used tdz type r+, throw in the 7:1 gear upgrade, catbontex and bocas. Enjoy.

Don't lower the rod tip and reel down. Keep the rod in a strike ready position, reel and swing quickly.

Tatula R 100XS 8:1 works for me for this application.

Take a look at Oldschool Horizontal Jigging thread on this site.

yeah he messaged me. Spending this much I'd rather buy new.

Completely understand your reasoning.

For another option, JLS has left hand Exsence DC's for $240ish. I have one on one of my jig rods and love it, 8:1 and DC braking on the Chronarch D frame/body. Metanium XG would never be a bad choice though ;).

100% agree with this.

I was looking at that actually. DVT kinda steered me away from the DC braking.

What is wrong with the DC breaking system?

Sounds like your are trying to justify buying another reel :)

Back in the day (90s) jig fishing could be done with a 5:1 reel.  They keep getting faster and faster and faster.

What is wrong with the DC breaking system?

I've worked on several DC Calais that were bone dry and beginning to seize with a light tan costing on everything. I've talked with other techs that have seen the same thing. Shimano was of no help when I talked to them. Probably just didn't reach the right person but non the less it's a mystery still.

I have two football jig rods, a flippin rod, and a finesse jig rod. I use a Met XG and Chronarch HG on my football jig rods, a Curado HG on my flippin rod, and a Chronarch on my finesse jig rod. A Curado HG pics up plenty of line IMO, but if you have the budget to get the Met XG then you should get it. It is a pure pleasure to fish.

idk lol the amount of fishing i do is insane 3-4 practice days a week plus 40-50 tourneys so I think it was an abuse thing.

Well there ya have it lol

Hmmm. So be it. Perhaps the reel was used in salt or it wasn't taken care of. I have never heard of that issue but yet again I dont own a Calais DC.

Purchase what you want but I know I will be adding a second Exscence DC and a Met XG.

Is this issue specific to the DC Calais reels or Shimano's DC systems in general? Should I be expecting the same issue on my Scorpion DC down the road at some point?

No Zillion love?

No Zillion love?

I would personally wait until the SV 103 comes out but who knows when that will be.  The TWS Zillion can be had for under $200.  If I needed a reel quickly, especially in a 9.1, I would go that route.
