Reels On A Budget

Featured Replies

I am looking to pick up a new baitcast reel or two in the near future and wanted some suggestions.  I am in college so I am on a budget and was trying to keep it under 75 a piece.  what would yall suggest as some good ones?  I have several reels already but just looking for newer and more upgraded reels.  I was thinking maybe a used Abu orra or a revo if I could find it? Pro qualifiers? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Check out the Lew's Speed Spools.

Hit up E bay and see what you can find.  I've upgraded almost all my gear at about a 50% discount or better depending on models.  Hard to argue when you pick up $250-$300 reels for $100-130 each.  And all new gear.

Academy Sports just ended a sale on the H2O Mettle....$40 for a $60 reel.  It has an aluminum frame.  Several guys on here feel it is an exceptional reel for the money.  I'm hoping it will be on sale Black Friday weekend so I can pick one up along with a few lures.  Check out Post #25.

Keep your eyes on the flea market section of this site.  i have bought and sold some quality gear on here for much less than retail.  many sites will offer some black friday discounts starting in the next week or two.

Guess i should have said in the first post that i currently have a mettle.  I really like the mettle, i was just curious what the best i could get for the price range was.  Ive always been an Abu Garcia fan, which is why I asked about the orra and revo. Thanks for all the replies!

I bought an Orra Winch this fall, and while I haven't put a lot of time on it yet, seems like a nice reel.  I think my best-bang-for-the-buck reels are my Daiwa Tatulas.  I got them new, from eBay dealers, for $92 each.  I have two seasons on them now and they have been great performers.

I have three Lew's Tournament Pros that have been excellent reels.  I know they're out of your price range, but due to my satisfaction with the ones I have, I personally wouldn't hesitate to try one of their lower-priced models.

The big sales are coming up... you might be able to find something pretty nice in your price range!

Tight lines,

Bob

Cabela's has some reels discounted right now below that price; not sure if they'll be an upgrade for you, but Abu Silver Max and Pro Max, Lew's laser MG speed spool, all under 75 right now. Daiwa Exceler at 80.

You can find Daiwa tatulas for $100 and get 15/20 off with a coupon.

I purchased the mettle about a 2 months ago so I only have 5 or so trips with it but there will be a review along shortly for it.  I am really liking it so far and really like the aluminum frame.

I have some PQ's for backup/friend reels and those things have pretty much been bulletproof. Excellent reel for the price.

Buy used from a reputable seller or wait for a Holiday Sale. Lots of $100 reels can be found for around $75.

Abu orra sx or pflueger supreme on walmart.Com for 80 bucks new.

Hard to beat some older shimanos at that price. I suggest citica 200E or curado 200B.

+1 on the Citica E series, just need to be patient and look around for them on the bay and various forums.

If you can afford to wait a bit, you can get a Pro Qualifier on sale. They're a heck of a reel for the money.

under 75$  I would look at the pro qualifer from BPS or the H20 Mettle.  I have used both and they are both very nice for the price point

Think im leaning towards the pro qualifier right now.  I always get academy gift cards from my aunts and uncles at christmas so ill probably use them and pick up another mettle on sale after christmas.  Thanks for all the replies so far!

Pro qualifier or lews on sale for new stuff would be my pick. Id go used though and find some shimano citica d, e, or even g series used for that price

I have 3 of the H2O Mettles, oldest is around 3 years old and still going strong. I prefer them to the PQ, the fact that they're cheaper is a nice bonus. The PQ is a proven reel as well though. The Abu Black Max is another pretty popular bargain priced reel.
