Dobyns Champion Extreme Hp Or.....

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at the dobyns champion extreme HP 702 spinning rod but was wondering for that price if I'd be better off going with a custom rod or JDM rod (if there are nice rods of either at that price point)?

That's not what I expected to hear! Do they make good spinning rods?

What are your intended uses for the rod? If primarily moving baits then all of your options might be a little overkill. If primarily bottom contact, where sensitivity is most important, then it might be worth your while to try and find a deal on a Loomis NRX. With that being said, I am also interested in the Dobyns HP rods....they look like nice rods and I hear they are a little lighter and more sensitive than the previous Extreme rods.

American legacy has loomis rods 25% off. Could get a NRX for $375

I was getting it for bottom contact. Mostly as a second drop shot rod and finesse rod. Is the nrx that good?

I had both an NRX 893 and DX744. Mind you I cannot speak for the new HP but the DX isn't even in the same league as the NRX. There is a reason that the NRX is a measuring stick for sensitivity. Is it needed? That's for you to decide.

Okay good to know. Its nice to hear from somebody who has both. Im gonna start looking into those now. I already have a dedicated drop shot rod so I can't decide if I get another or just an all around finesse rod.

How did you find them 25% off? I cant seem to see it come up as 25% off on their site

You're going to get a lot of different answers...  Kistler will come up, NRX will come up about 10 times as the end all rod that every other rod is measured against as far as sensitivity and action.  Megabass will come up, St. Croix will come up.  Phenix K2 will come up.

You will hear a lot of opinions on why those rods are a lot better than this new rod that likely 2 or 3 people have fished with and will recommend a different rod.

What exactly are you going to be using the rod for?

I suppose its just like any other rod thread... I already have a nice fully dedicated drop shot rod but to be honest that's about really all I fish on a spinning rod so a second drop shot rod I guess or an all around finesse rod? I know the actions are completely different for the two but maybe something for a ahakey head or other small jigs.

I have the dx702s and if I am strictly throwing an open hook or light wire hook dropshot, that is the rod I want period.  7lb fish, no problem on it I've just caught so many big ones on it I fully trust it.

As far as versatility goes I prefer the dx742s...  awesome rod for senkos, shakeyhead, dropshot texas rigged, tubes... just a great versatile rod.

Hmmm interesting.. I never thought about the 742. Does it make a good drop shot rod? Is it a little stiffer than the 702?

It's incredibly unlikely you'll be disappointed whichever route you decide to go. I have a handful of NRX's and Dobyns (Champions), and I've been more than happy with the performance of both of them. 20% off of an HP is a pretty solid deal. Best of luck!

I figured out from the guys at dobyns the NEW HP dx702 is stronger than the previous one. I just ordered one and with the added strength it should be the perfect drop shot rod.

Got the dx702 hp and it's a sick rod. I love fishing a 1/4oz weight with this rod. Great sensitivity, balance and action. Caught a bunch of spots with this rod already

I can't speak for the DX702 HP but I do have 2 of the old DX702s for dropshotting and would not trade them for any other rod(ok, maybe for new hp rods). I do have experience with the new DX742C HP though and it is an all around better rod than the old DX line. I also have experience with the NRX and personally don't like it. I'm actually trying to sell it and replace the 894NRX with a DX745 HP. The NRX is sensitive but I like the way the DX rods feel more.

I went with the dobyns. I do like phenix's rods but get them 25% off through club tournaments and wanted to take advantage of 20% other brands.

haha i know but just stating my opinion. i never said the dx is more sensitive because obviously the nrx is more sensitive but i like the feel of the dx rods more is what i meant.

Haha...  I don't find it as crazy sensitive as everyone else does.  I can think of about 20 rods I would rather fish with than an NRX but that's just me.  I don't ever say anything because you're immediately labeled as a complete moron if you dare say anything aside from the almighty Loomis' flagship rod is the most sensitive ever.
