What is the difference in Jig's??? There are casting jigs, football jigs and I guess regular jigs. When do you and how do you fish the different Jigs??? I am sure this is ask a lot, so any advice or opinions would be great. Thanks

Football jigs are more for dragging on rocks I believe. A swim jig is basically a spinner bait without the blades. Someone recently posted something about jigs for newcomers which was excellent as well as the sticky on this forum.

We can break those down into function groups;

Weedless with weed guards.

Swim jigs.

Swimbait heads.

Open water without weed guards

A jig head is designed to perform where you intend to use it and how you intend to present it.

Thanks for the input guys and WRB that's a lot of jigs. I'll be sure to check out the Jig post at the top, just trying to bring in more of those Bass when the worms don't work.....

Jig heads are designed for different tasks.

"casting jigs" will probably have a streamlined head designed to go through cover.

Football jigs are meant to be dragged on the bottom.

Of all the lures in an anglers arsenal the jig is one of the simplest and yet the most over completed by anglers!

Many will tell you "ya need grass jigs, brush jigs, and jigs for rocks.

What do y'all do when faced with all three?

The majority of anglers are seldom faced with just one of the three.

I cast, flip, and pitch to grass, brush (wood), and rock with the same jig; guess what the bass do not seem to care.

What I look for in a jig is a smooth transition from the line to the eye and around the belly, which requires the eye to be rolled slightly foward. The reasoning is my jig will follow the line up to the cover and then slide over the cover smoothly.

I would select one manufacture and stick with them for now and the later add you own personal repertoire of confusion.

And I'm betting one of these guys makes a jig you may have used a time or two.

Agreed, except for one thing... I use the same jig for flipping and pitching, no matter what the cover, but for offshore structure fishing, football jig is king... It has a straight-down fall, and that seems to be a big factor for me, since I aggressively hop and stroke a jig a lot when I'm offshore fishing... Also, the football jigs I use have a lighter hook than my flipping jig, which helps with long line hooksets...Tight lines!

Jig fishing can be as simple or complex as you make it. I think a brush head is pretty universal for most types of bottom composition.
