Hooks for plastics

Recommended Posts

I know there are a lot of threads out there about this but the more I read the more confused I get. What style hooks should I use for these categories? Im not looking for 1 hook I want to know what different hooks you use for each category. Thanks!

I use a 4/0 EWG for everything you listed a majority of the time.

3/0 straight shank round bend for everything up to the diameter of a Senko or a Fluke/frog then it's a 4/0 EWG.

Some punching is do with a 4/0 straight shank round bend.

baby brush hog - 2/0 or 3/0 offset worm hook T-style rigged

I only use wide gaps on fatter baits . A six inch jelly worm I use a 2.0 or 3.0 offset worm hook . I dont skin hook with them either , bury it .Skin hooking with them with those hooks causes the worm to be kinked .

I'm in the same category as Blue, I would use an EWG for all of those. Obviously size of the hook depends on the size of bait, but my most used hook is 4/0 as well.

Need not to get confused because, as I said it before, you have read too much, with a 4/0 EWG hook you can pretty much hook 90% of the baits.

I'll concur with Many of the others.  My go to would be a 4/0 EWG on all of those if for no other reason than it works and I don't have to worry about out thinking myself every time I change baits.  Was it the bait? Was it the hook? Was it the color? Presentation? My deodorant? Something I ate? Something I said?

offset worm hook on everyone i can get away with.  if the plastic is just too bulky though, i'll go with a Wide Gap.

I carry offset O'Shaughnessy, offset round bend, offset wide gap, and skip gap hooks in 3/0 and that covers about everything. Experiment and see what you like. For whatever reason I have a killer hookup percentage (deep and top of the mouth too) with the O'Shaughnessy hooks.

My hook choices depends on the size of the lure, I will choose the smallest I can get away with,.... like in worms? i have some finesse worms that i will texas rig with a 1/0 offset shank round bend, and then I have some 12 inch monsters that I will texas rig with a 6/0 ewg,... this is based on the thickness of the worms head obviously,..Pit boss and brush hogs have some thickness to them  so they would get a 4/0 ewg,... lizards fall into same catagory as worms. and the few times I actually used a senko i think i used a 1 octotpus

So is my conclusion that a 4/0 ewg is the most versatile hook correct? Sorry for my obvious stupidity

I think that it mostly depends on your environment.  I fish from the bank in small bodies of water, so I use 1/0 round bend hooks for any lures with a small-diameter (finesse worms, some 3" or 3 1/2" creatures, etc.). For anything "big," like 5" senkos, 6" jelly worms, or 8" lizards, I like to use a 3/0 round bend.

With these rigs, light line, and a gentle retrieve, the bass in my area cannot control themselves.  Try it out.
