Plastics, crank bait, top water, Jerk bait? Is there a weight criteria for something to be a BFS bait?

 

I'm asking cuz I just don't really know.

 

Anything weighing less than 3/16oz would pretty much fall into that category.

Maybe it means " Big ------- Spinnerbait  .

Bait Finesse System (I might be wrong on the S)

 

light lures, lighter rod, light baitcasting reel. the reel usually has a shallow spool and is optimized for light baits. the stuff many, including myself, throw on a spinning rig. looks fun though!

 

The JDM Aldebaran BFS or the old Daiwa Pixy are popular examples.

 

 

For me personally, I consider Finesse anything I throw on 8lb test or less, Medium light spinning rod, and for lures, I usually figure anything small like a 2-4" soft bait, smaller profile crankbait, or anything I put a Split shot in front of even if it is a bigger soft bait.

 

I use alot of smaller profile Jigs like the Strike King bitsy jigs during tough bites or for skipping docks etc. but I don't necessarily consider that finesse since they catch big fish & sometimes match the forage.

 

I think Finesse means something different to everyone. I consider Drop Shotting finesse, but I have Creature baits with a heavy 1 ounce weight for Dropshotting at times, still consider it finese even if the bait is a Rage craw, Rage Bug etc. 

 

You can finesse any lure, I often will "Finesse" a Frog in the Summer but what I mean is I work it very gently to see if that generates strikes after not getting strikes since I know one of the mistakes I make most is fishing too fast, sometimes just thinking in terms of Finesse makes me slow down.

 

Anything 1/16 or less is finesse for me. I pitch with 1/8-3/16 oz weights on heavy line as much ass possible. Not sure there is a right answer but if I have my Light action spinning rod and 6lb test, then my Rapala F-11 is now finesse.

My personal definition stuff like this;

• 4" or less plastics, weightless or on a 1/16-1/8 jig
• Cranks/jerks in the ***" and 1/16-3/16oz range
• Inline and standard spinners in the 1/16-3/16oz range

But really, any plastic smaller than a 4" senko or a hard bait smaller than a Rapala 7.  I think people get very hung up on exact nomenclature with stuff like this, I think "lures that would be impossible/a pain to throw on an "average" casting combo" pretty much encompasses it all.  

 

Or maybe "any lure that you could throw on a $50 spinning combo,yet you choose to use a $500 casting combo for" would work as well 

Yeah, the weight criteria is whatever your BFS rod is rated for  

 

also, it's Baitcast Finesse System

agreed that "finesse" can mean small baits and/or the way a bait is presented on spinning or casting but "BFS" is used to describe light baits on a BC combo. usually when describing the reel.

Bait:

A light or ultra light power rod with light line, throwing a light bait is what most consider BFS 'bait finesse system' It's very popular in Japan and has made its way over here. Theres no exact weight but generally stuff under roughly 5 grams fits the bill. A Jackall flick shake worm on a 1/16th jig head would be a good example. A weightless 3" senko is another. A lot of popular bfs rods only have a max lure weight of 7 grams.

How do you like the CR721?  I just got a CR723 and even just playing with in the yard I can tell I am going to love it when I get it on the water.  I think I will settle more to the L then the UL side of BFS and love short rods, so it is at the top of the list.  Specifically, how does it handle lures at the extreme ends of it's range?
