Does Anyone Use Mono for Jigs/Spinnerbaits?

So...if mono can be used for jigs/spinnerbaits could fluoro be used for smaller topwaters like poppers, buzzbaits and spook type baits? I'm probably overthinking this but I'm just trying to find a good all-around line for my jack of all trades rod/reel setup. I have my heavy setup with braid for frogs, heavier topwaters and larger jigs/spinnerbaits and I'm using 12lb. Invizx for my crankbait rod now I just need the most versatile line for my most versatile rod and I'll be set :).

10 - 12 lb. mono is as "versatile" as they come in my book

I feel like there are posters here who would use Big Game as the sole material they'd employ in rebuilding society after an extinction level event.

I use CXX for all my clear line needs because it's super tough, I hate stretch and spending money sucks.

Moss Green CXX in 12 or 15# size.

Sometimes I feel like there are posters here who would use solid gold bricks as the sole material they'd employ in rebuilding society after an extinction level event.  :P

It swings both ways around here. Some feel they want to spend way more than necessary as they feel it is a part of the fun to them from what I gather. I could care less if someone bought a Koenigsegg to drive to work or a Ford truck. Many people chose to do it their way no matter how ludicrous it may seem to others.

To me I enjoy the fishing and catching the fish somewhat consistently. Not dumping all my spare cash off at the tackle shop. Big Game offers a readily available proven product that doesn't waste money so I use it.

Everybody has had their favorite flavor, nothing wrong with that at all!

I was simply having fun with the fact that no matter what the thread or technique in question, there's ALWAYS a guy using Big Game for it. Of course mono is fine for spinners and jigs!  The stereotypical attributes many assign to lines are BS.  Use whatever works for your situation and you enjoy the feel of!  ???

I've been told that this line is super stiff and hard to tie knots in...true? What about Sunline Armilo Defier...maybe in a 15lb. test...would that be good?

Its not that bad.  I love CXX, as it has very little stretch, is tough stuff and is also cheap.

Why would I recommend a line like that, let alone use it?

No, after the armageddon, we wouldn't have to worry about InterWeb® experts, so we'd rebuild with 14 lb Ande Tournament green, cause then there'd be enough for everyone, and we'd make everyone start in the salt before chasing green landlocked little fish, and peace and harmony would reign ever after.

I just know everybody has their own version of stiff and hard to tie and wanted to see what you thought since you personally use the stuff.

I use 8, 10, 12, 15, and 20 lb.  I use KVD L&L.  I don't have any issues with the stuff.

  • 2 years later...

I regularly use 15lb McCoys either Mean Green or the Clear version. I also use it as leaders with 30lb PP braid too.

i use 10 to 14 pound Sufix Siege for everything.

10 pound on my spinning rig, 12 to 14 on my baitcasting rig.

I caught lots of fish on jigs, spinner baits , crank baits,(which were called plugs when I started bass fishing)  top water poppers, spooks, and walking baits when the only braid was Dacron, and mono was simply called fishing line.   Then super lines came out followed by fluorocarbon.  I started using braid and swore I would never use mono again.  Floro was almost invisible, the only leader I would use  for everything that swims in fresh or salt water.( fish must have had bad eyesight before floro was invented).  Now I'm back to using mono, (Berkly Big Game, or Maxima Ultra green) for most of my bass fishing. I was tired of tying leaders, not being able to cut the line with my teeth, and many other difficulties involved with braid. Almost all of my bass fishing is done with 12# Berkly Big Game. (Maxima for trout and Salmon, Ande Pink for Salt Water)  There are times when I do miss the sensitivity of braid, and the sink rate of floro, but still manage to catch bass and have fun with a lot less hassle.  Shorter answer would be yes mono works great for jigs and spinner baits.

For spinnerbaits - trilene big game #15

For jigs -  P-line tatical flourocarbon #15 or 17.

I'm anothe one who uses mono for just about everything. Suffix or trilene. I hear a lot of people saying you need braid with floro leaders for stuff. I have no problem catching smallies in 30-40ft with mono. I dont know why people think it doesnt work.

I use braid with fluoro leaders on most of my spinning rods. I have one with mono (copoly to be exact-8lb Silver thread) that I use also.

The people who say it doesn't work just echo what they hear from others, they more than likely don't have first hand experience.

I normally use florocarbon for jigs and Texas rigs but I wouldn't hesitate to use mono on these if I needed to. I still use mono for crankbaits and spinnerbaits. I love Sufix Siege 12# on baitcasters and 10# on spinning gear.

My biggest fish this year came on a jig with 15lb big game.

The reason a lot of people use braid exclusively is because we spend a small fortune on rods that are on the highest level of sensitivity. Anything other than braid takes that level down a notch or two. We all do what we need to do to catch fish though. Mono shines imo for treble hooked baits and fast tipped rods. I dont use it at all, aside from spool backing, as my cranking rods are all moderate action.

Even less expensive rods work well with braid when spinners or chatters are tied on. Even with my Aird-X/President combo loaded with PP I can feel the vibration of the blades during retrieve.
