Ideal Rod For Wobble Head / Swing Jig ?

Featured Replies

Interesting to see how Tommy Biffle started with a 6'10" Heavy / Fast bait cast rod and now has moved on to a 7'6" heavy / Fast rod (not sure the original Biffle 6'10" heavy action rod is made any more ?) . I get how the wobble head / swing jig should be fished with the rod pointed down so the jig stays on the bottom and a stiffer action rod  so when the wobble head / swing jig hits rocks you get a hard , quick deflection to product reaction bites . *The above said , what is your go to wobble head / hard head / swing jig / articulating jig head (or what ever else it's called ) rod of choice (i.e. length , heavy or medium heavy action) that won't break the bank ? ... Thanks in advance - mainly wondering if a super technique specific rod is needed here for success with wobble head / swing jigs ?

i dont have technique specific rods, id use my 7'4 heavy fast rod

I use a 6'10" MHF when I throw a swim jig. I use the same rod I throw spinnerbaits and chatter baits on.

7'2" Heavy Fast Daiwa Tatula for biffle/swing heads

I use a 7'5 mh, same rod i throw my carolina rigs on. Haven't caught a fish in either technique, recently started fishing then this year.

I use a either a 7'3 Heavy/Fast or a 7' MH/Fast depending on when and where I am using the swing heads.

Stained, late summer-early fall, outside deep grass lines. I reach for the 7'3", as I am often using a 3/4 - 1oz head, making super long casts, and heavier line because water clarity isn't an issue.

In clear early pre spawn shallower water, I use the 7' MH, with 12-15lb line. I am often using no more than 3/4's oz head, and most of the time a 1/2oz.

Food for thought - I have a 6'6" MH Fast worm rod and a 7' MH Fast Carolina rod : Although most people use straight FC line for "bottom bugg'n" ,  If I used say #40 lb. braid to a 5' #15 lb. FC leader could I not get a harder deflection off of rocks due to the no stretch nature of braid ? *I'm thinking a MH Fast rod then becomes a Heavy  Fast rod with braid + FC leader ?

Swing jigs , not swim jigs ...

my apologies I misread it. However I still throw swing head jigs on a MH rod. I throw all jigs 5/8 or under on a MH rod. Frogs and Flipping heavy cover is the only time I use a HVY rod.

As @ww2farmer said, it depends on the weight.  I can't help but think that you're overthinking this, OP.  Use the the rod appropriate for the weight that you're throwing and the bottom or cover that you're fishing.  Maybe I'm just a simpleton, but to me, it isn't that much different than a jig or jika, or even a rage-rig at the lighter weights.  I want to feel what it is doing down there; and I want to be able to set the hook, but I wouldn't begin to try to figure out how my rod affects deflections.

For me, length has more to do with what cover I'm encountering, and how long a cast I'm making.  I like the shorter rod when dealing with laydowns and docks, in close quarters, with the fish on a short leash.  Longer casts, maybe in deeper water, I'd go for a longer rod.

7' MH/F and fish your heart out

It's a jig any good jig/worm rod will work perfectly. If you prefer longer jig rods go it. My preference is a 6'10" H fast rod because that is what I like to use and they fit my boats deck. Longer jig rods help when working near the surface or over weed mats, not needed where I fish in deep rocky structured lakes with sparse cover.

Tom - who today has a good 6'10" H fast rod that won't break the bank ?

Under 3/8oz I use the Irod Crusher 733. Over 3/8oz I use the Crusher 764.

I used to use the Megabass X4 Destruction. It was just a little to moderate for my liking.

I'm thinking of next year, maybe, picking up another Magic Stick, probably in the Air lineup and using that instead of the Crusher 764.

I have a GL2 804 JWR that I like for this.  The EX6 line would be the equivalent.

Looking for a 4 or 5 heavy power jig & worm rod under 7' in the $150 price point doesn't show any options. Daiwa has a Elite Montgomery 6' 9" heavy jig & worm rod rated for 1/4- 1 1/2 oz at $180 that would work. 7'-7'2" more choices today with longer rods being more popular. Dobyns FR 704 is 7' at $110.  I would check with Alex at ALX and see if he has anything that meets the specs under $150, if that is your max price point?

Thanks Tom - for just 2 more inches (7') would open up a lot more options for a heavy F/XF .

After a quick look on TW : Besides the current Quantum Smoke 6'10" Heavy XF ($139) - I spotted the new & improved Abu Garcia 2.0 Veritas 7' Heavy XF ($99) coming Sept. 21st and the current Falcon BuCoo SR 6'10" F Heavy F ($99) ... Never had a Falcon or a Abu Garcia Rod before but both will be on my short list . Thoughts ?
