Best deep diving crankbait reel in your opinion?

Featured Replies

Just wanted to get people's thoughts on what they think the 3 best reels are for deep diving cranks (10xd, etc.).

Cheers!

Under 100 bucks - orra winch

Over 100 bucks- curado 200iP

I seldom fish a deep diver, and thus have no reel specifically for that.  CroakHunter's suggestion looks like a good one.  I would also look at a round Shimano.  I've read that they are excellent for that type of fishing.

Calcutta 250DC, you can find these today on eBay and have them servived by a good tech, it will last forever.

The inexpensive Cardiff 300A is also a good choice for the deep divers making long cast has the line capacity needed without changing the IPT radically.

Curado 200B38 & 200B5

Calcutta 50 spooled with 10-12# has more than enough capacity for DD22, DD22 HD, & NXS!

Interesting! I would have thought that a 200 Calcutta Conquest or a Ryoga, or Megabass would be the best that money can buy here.

80 yards of 12# Big Game = 1/2 spool at 40 yard cast isn’t my idea of a deep cranking reel, although the IPT will way down providing good leverage. Great reel however and looks in good condition after all the years.

TD 150P gear set (5:1) installed in TD 153 HSTA is a workhorse! Add the  Carbontex drag kit while you’re in there!

Megabass lin 10.

Daiwa zillion hlc.

Cardiff 300A 180 yds of 14#, 100 yds of wasted line!

As WRB implied, a larger diameter and/or wider spool is a better choice for throwing deep divers as with smaller spools the line level drops so much on a long cast that the retrieve rate is severely reduced. A larger spool doesn't suffer from such a big change in retrieve rate. I use a conquest 51 on my square bill rod with 10lb and love it, but would go for a significantly larger reel for long casts with deep divers.

My personal favorite is an ABU 4600C3 w/12# Big Game or a 5500C3 w/15# Big Game.

Yeah, I'm old school. Or just plain old.

Agreed. For the money, hard to beat. This is my current deep cranking reel.

The Orra winch has been discontinued! This is so disappointing!

You can find them on eBay still new. I just switched to the Revo 3 winch since I got it for $108 brand new on eBay. Couldn't resist it.

I can only comment on the reels I have used .  My deep diving reel is a BPS Johnny Morris with a 5.2 to 1  gear ratio . My older Abus 4600's  with 4.6 to 1 cast a mile and have the torque .

The handle is on the wrong side... ;)

Not when you fish it 'under the rod' and reel it backasswards ~

Also makes casting a real adventure.
