Those texas jig weights that AJ and Catt are always going on about .  I have a spinnerbait mold . Instead of putting a hook in it I just ran the wire all the way through and Tada .

okay something i've been thinking every time this comes up. is this not just a punch weight with an ewg instead of a straight sank flipping hook?

I'll use whatever hook matches my bait , but yes its like  a punch weight but it didnt cost me  a couple bucks for one . It is basically free . This one is from the 1/4 ounce cavity . I also have a 1/8 , 3/8 and 1/2 . I just made another one from a banana head lure .

Initially I'd say Yes - 

However, by using the correct tonnage for the job, that rig is an effective option in many presentations & situations besides 'punching'.   

Also putting 'names' on everything can limit one's imagination. 

It's just a weight, a skirt , some plastic & a hook - fish it wherever . . . . . .

I first started using them back in the mid-70s by simply inserting a bullet weight into a skirt.

 

During the 80s a company out of Shreveport, Louisiana produced them under the name Big Red's Flying Jig. It is nothing more than a spinner bait head less the wire arm (pictured); the junebug colored one is an original Big Red's Flying Jig.

 

Not only is this a deadly Punch Lure it is extremely deadly during winter when coupled with a 6 Gene Larew Hawg Craw. 

 

We call em a Texas Rigged Jig!

Might try one of the pull pins that Do-it makes for their slip jig, which is what they call the mold for those sinkers.

I wire tie my skirts onto them, it's a nice rig that I should fish more than I do because it always does well when I remember to use it.

I really like that color combination!

Its not a straight pull the channel is curved .So its tough to pull the wire out . A flexible wire would make it a lot faster . 

Maybe floral wire? That's what I used to use to tie my baits until I switched to copper to stop the rust. It's not really flexible, but I think it probably is enough so that you could pull it out of the mold.

The first one I made was in 1988 . I took a half ounce weight to a  grinding wheel . It was a lot of work so I only made the one .

Exercise in futility!

 

During the early 70s you had 2 choices; vinyl or rubber skirts neither one made it easy to insert a weight. Needle Point weights helped but not much!

The ones you all made look pretty good. Has anyone tried these weights with with any of the available "EZ" change skirts? I was thinking with those you could change the whole look of the rig on the fly pretty quickly just by swapping the skirt and plastic trailer.

  I   bought some 1/4 ounce lead weights two years and I switch  out skirts  . I'm not familiar with EZ change but any skirt will slip on .

I zip tie mine in place like I do on jig... sometimes they pull ya skirt down!

 

I throw pretty much the same colors as a regular jig so I make up a 1/2 dozen of each. 

 

Like a regular jig I'll change trailer colors before I cut one off!
