Which type of line is best for medium diving crankbaits? I'm fishing 8' to 10' max depth crankbaits in about 4' to 5' of water today, and I'm wondering if the 40lb braid that I usually use has enough abrasion resistance for that. Would 14lb mono be better for that application? The bottom of the pond is mostly leaves and weeds, with the occasional stick/log. I'm using a 7.0' medium heavy fast action rod. Thanks in advance.

I don't use braid for fishing cranks, you could use mono depending on what type of cover you are fishing. I normally throw 15 to 17 pound flouro. Mono floats which pulls the crankbait up and it won't go as deep. Flourocarbon sinks and also has less stretch. So if you want that bait to sink and you want a better hook set on the fish, use flouro. If you are fishing shallow, you could try mono, but you would need a stiffer rod to get those hooks in the fishes face good enough. This is all IMO, Good luck man.

I use Yo-Zuri Hybrid for all my cranking now.  I now use 8, 10 and 12#.  I'd suggest that I could easily get away with 10#YZH for all of my cranking - from 1/4oz lipless to 10XD's......paired with KVD line conditioner

Are there any advantages of mono over flouro, or are they about the same? I've always heard to use flourocarbon for crankbaits, but I honestly don't see why it's a better choice than monofilament.

I never used floro for crankbaits . I  dont carry   10 to 20 combos like the pros do so I just stick with mono  to cover everything .   I tried floro and braid on a worm rod and switched back to mono .

I use yozuri hybrid for cranking and squarebills usually in 10lb... 8lb with small cranks. For magnum cranks, cranks in grass and lipless cranks I use 15lb big game because it stretches alot less than 10lb yozuri hybrid... makes short work of ripping em out of the grass. 

8-20 pound test Big Game Mono.

I also like big game mono.  Cheap and has worked flawlessly for me.

12 lb Ande

I use 12 lb Stren mostly. Sometimes 30lb power pro.

10lb Big Game, no reason to spend the money on fluoro for cranking IMO unless you're really trying to get a bait as deep as possible. 

15 Pound Big Game.

Use mono if you ever fish topwater on the same setup or don't care about depth, and use flurocarbon if you need added depth.

 

As for line strengths, it depends what you're fishing. If you're fishing clear water, use 10-12lb line, and if you fish around cover more often, try 14-17lb.

40lb Maxcurato to a 12lb maxima fluoro leader (probably 2 arms length), I'm not a pro either, so braid to a leader makes alot of sense when you use the same rod/reel for multiple set ups.

8 or 10lb. Invisx mostly.. If you want to save some money the K9 fluoro is really good and reasonable at 14.99 for 300 yds.

Thanks, just picked up some big game mono today. (and a few lures that I didn't plan on getting...)

If I had a dollar for every time I said that I would be a rich man. Well no, I'd have more lures. I'd have alot more lures. 

I use 10-12# abrazx or invisx on all my cranks, unless its deep winter and i down size to 8#. I usually have 4 or 5 cranks tied on at all times, 2 squarebills, a med diver, and a mag or xdeep, all on casting , and a shadrap on spinning tackle

I use braid and a FC or mono leader. I feel using a moderate rod and straight mono has too much give to get a solid hookset. See what works best for you. 

30 lb Power Pro and mono leader.  Love it

I would say 10-12lb fluorocarbon is quite appropriate for medium divers. You can try Big Game or Sufix Siege if the shallower range of the depth is more at your target range as well.
