I stop at the grocery store on my way home from work. The bill is $39 and change. I give the cashier a 20, a 10, and a roll of quarters. 
"I don't think we can accept a roll of quarters as payment"
"If you want, I can remove them from the roll and you can count them all"
"Yes, I think that would be best"

I would suppose the clerk is held responsible for any shortages and your payment offer blew his mind.

 

He was probably thinking that if the roll is one quarter short it is up to him to make it up.

If rolled in paper, I get it.  If rolled in plastic, ya can’t fix stupid

Maybe they wanted to count the quarters to give you your dollar in change!!

Story popped up on my facebook this morning, person paid with 2 rolls of dimes. Clerk did not check because he was busy, person had rolled pennies instead....

 

If I was a clerk no way I would accept payment if I could not physically count it. No way to tell what is rolled up in there.

I work in retail, and a customer paid for his item with two $5 rolls of dimes. After he left, the manager came over and said not to take them in rolls anymore because there’s a good chance they’re short. We busted them open and started counting. Lo and behold, both rolls were short and the store had to eat the loss.

 

So this is a pretty common practice in retail. Not because customers aren’t trustworthy, but because a lot of people don’t know how to count.

This is what's wrong with the world. No offense to you, but technology makes it easy to spend money also makes it easy to tick away money. 

I've actually been more concerned about the actual cost of personal tech than the risk of losing appreciation for money.  Cell, cable, internet, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sirius... probably close to 5 grand a year just in my small household....its nuts

We're in the same boat. It's extremely easy to spend money you never see.

That's the truth. There are some months I'm pretty sure I never handle cash.

I've taken to keeping a small stack of singles in my console, because I'd commonly get to a park entrance or kayak launch that I don't have pass for and not have any cash on me at all.  That trip back out to find an ATM really blows when you're ready to hit the water.

Because of all the new found knowledge I obtained  from this thread,  I decided to try it out. Went to the dunkin donuts drive thru this morning. Paid the young lady with 240 loose pennies. The look on her face was priceless. Thanks all!!!

Just don't get mad when they use their "reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"

I know that look!  I got the exact same look from my son when I handed him a slide rule and asked him to give me the cube root of 12,000
