I'm using my medium cranking rod (Avid AVC70MM) and a Daiwa Sol reel to toss a 1/2 oz. spoon for steelhead in the first video.  In the second, I'm throwing a much smaller spoon with my finesse rod.

Only if you want fissures opening up and hot lava to spew out

So now we know why there are fissures opening up and hot lava spewing all over the place, why don't you just cross the streams while you're at it?....  :)

I use ultra- light setups for trout fishing. The trout are small. I’d never feel the nibble with a heavier setup.

I caught 38 rainbow trout ( including a Palomino trout) in less than 6 hours of fishing one day with a bass rod so I would say what lure you are using is more important than if you are using a bass rod vs a trout rod.

In my neck of the woods trout are hatchery raised and some grow really large with all that trout food, a manly “bass” rod is what you need to go ketchin them critters.

I don't see why not. But myself, I'm more likely to use trout rods for bass. Us bassers are way over tackled most of the time.

I use my dropshot rod for trout all the time as well as my Ned rig rod, the trout don't seem to mind.

Caught my first rainbow trout while targeting carp. Used a 6'10 Mh-xf casting rod, daiwa tatula 100, 50lb braid to a 15lb fluorocarbon leader, and a gamakatsu octopus hook #8. Overkill, yes. Worked just fine though. I will target rainbow again but with a medium light - medium spinning rod just for the fun aspect.

Granted mine was not near as large as A-Jay's. That's a nice fish.

I am starting to learn that a lot of this technique specific gear is not required. Which I have read here many times, but its actually starting to set in :)

The fish don’t care, you might though.  A medium heavy with 20lb mono isn’t going to cast a little spoon very well.

One of my favorite rods is a 7’ medium light fast (bass rod) Use it for trout, salmon, bass even schoolie stripers.  Because... it bomb casts a small rat-l-trap,  throws a weightless t-rig lizard, etc..

How big are your trout?  Mine are normally 0.5-3lbs I throw mostly 3” GULP minnows on a jig head for them in lakes and larger rivers.  my 5’ 6” ultralight throws them but can be difficult to get a hook set with it at any distance, because it’s too light and short for this jighook bait.  So I prefer my 7’medium light for this application.  Just consider what lure weights you will be using and where you are fishing.

The water I fish can have anything from 2lbs up to 15lbs. It’s a brown trout and smallmouth dominate reservoir. And I fish mostly live bait sawbellies, also 1/2oz spoons  I believe, trolling and downrigging

Conventional tackle for trout? Pfft, everyone knows you can only catch trout on multi thousand dollar fly gear...?

Reminds me of some bass fishermen in my area that swear you need a baitcaster for bass fishing yet I ignore what they say and continue to catch bigger bass than what they do on my spinning gear.

Some of the fisherman that I know and most respect don’t use casting gear. While I personally like it, the bass don’t seem to mind what you use. Do your thing!

I use a ultra light with 4lb test and a joesfly blackgnat spinflys. I think using livebait we won’t feel the slightest nibble with heavier tackle.

i was using a light action rod when I didn’t feel the light nibbles. Someone let me try there ultra light and I was hooked ever since.

The OP says he will mostly be trolling.  I don’t think an ultralight is the best rod for this situation,  and sensitivity isn’t needed.

For a bass rod I would opt for a 7’medium moderate(cranking stick). 7’6” would be even better if they have one.  That should do you just fine for dragging a spoon/bait.  I’ve  used my 7’MHF spinning rods in my downriggers for Lake trout (avg 1-5lb up to 18+) trolling 4” shiners behind 6” dodgers 100’ down. They worked fine and you probably already have one or two of those.  A more moderate action and longer rod is generally better for the application though.

I’ll tell you though,  if you want a super fun way to troll for trout,  find an old 5 or 6 weight fly rod get a cheap deep arbor fly reel with a good drag,  and load it with lead core.

Hi there, what rod & reel setup do you have?

We have a stocked lake here and sometimes I go hit it for the Rainbows. Three rods I use for the trout are:

Pflueger President-20 on 6'6" UL/F Diawa Spinmatic - this is what I normally use for Ned rigs.

Mitchel Avocet RZ-200 on 6'6" ML/F Avocet - my shore fishing/backup finesse rod.

Pflueger President-25 on 7'0" Fury ML/F (702SF) - my main finesse rod.

Bass rigs are totally suitable for going after trout - if I was able to go somewhere to target steelhead:

Pflueger Trion-35 on 7'0" MH/M Okuma Stratus VI - my spinning crank/jig rod.
