Band Of Brothers / The Pacific

Featured Replies

We own both, and watch them a couple times a year. My dad was in WW2, and I am always in awe of what he, and all who served went thru. Who ever coined the phrase " The Greatest Generation " was spot on.

If you are able, Watch "The Pacific War in Color" on the Smithsonian channel.  Great footage I've never seen before.

Ive always been more interested in the pacific theatre of the war. For some reason, the battles in the solomon islands interest me the most , I Just watched some of the Pacific recently. Had an uncle that was in the navy on a carrier in the pacific during the war. He wouldnt talk about it much.

A great book is " Gaudalcanal diary " and I love the book " PT 109 " which is about John F. Kennedies' experience in the solomons in the war.

It's been years since I saw Band of Brothers, but I loved it.

I just finished Pacific (Amazon Prime) and it left me wanting.  I didn't find it nearly as satisfying.   Following a unit through the war was more engaging; characters AND episodes were clearly related.  Pacific, IMO, failed by telling unrelated stories, and then spent way too much time on 'external' relationships.  I never got the least bit invested in the characters.  In fact, I probably couldn't have picked 'Sledge' out of a line-up even after having watched the entire series.

I own both series. I've met Don Malarky.  If you really want to get a feel for the period read:

Band of Brothers

Beyond Band of Brothers

Shifty's War

Citizen Soldier

D-Day

Dog Company

Fox Company

The Wild Blue

Helmet For My Pillow

The Pacific

With The Old Breed ( E.B. Sledge )

Midnight Sun Morning Star

Unbroken

Ghost Soldiers

Eisenhower And The Oder

The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw

I know it's not WWII, but I encourage everyone to read the book, One Million Steps. It changed my entire mind set on Marines (Any combat troops) in Afghanistan. Every time I see a young guy/gal who is an amputee, it brings me to tears.

I retired 14 months ago which has allowed me to take time to read.  It is one of my pleasures now.  I have read 31 books so far.  I love it.
