I live in Wisconsin, and I'm considering buying a new boat and trailer from a dealer in Indiana. If I do this, would I have to pay sales tax to the Indiana dealer? Or just here in Wisconsin when I register it?

I live in Illinois and bought a new boat in Michigan. I paid no tax to the dealer in Michigan but paid it to Illinois when I applied for my titles for both the boat and trailer.

You should only pay in the state that you'll going to register it in.

That's how it works in my home state. 

You might have to pay a "use" tax. I believe if the sales tax in your state is higher than the state the boat is purchased in, you pay the difference to the state you live in.

It may not be viable in your state. It is in fact implemented in IL http://www.revenue.state.il.us/Individuals/Illinois-Use-Tax.htm  IL also imposes this tax in between counties. So If I buy a boat or a car in Lake County IL but I live in Cook County IL, I need to pay the difference.

Michigan is a beautiful state ever thought about moving? LOL

It depends on the laws of the 2 states involved. They are all different.

I got an answer from the WI. DNR today. If I pay taxes to Indiana or any other state, I do not pay any tax to Wisconsin.

Just here in WI when you register it.

 

Bought my boat from a a guy in Chicago, registered here, paid tax due.

 

Buddy did the same thing you're doing: Bought in Indiana, paid tax here.

Not applicable in WI.

 

The state isn't quite that desperate yet that they try to tax everything...
