Rattle or Silent

Featured Replies

Looking to purchase my first Whopper Plopper and I'm undecided on the silent or rattle version. Does anyone have a preference?

I would say rattle and heres why:

The whopper popper is already a pretty "aggressive" lure if you know what I mean.  It is supposed to make a disturbance and get the fishes attention.  Adding on the rattles will just enhance that.  Just my .02 though.

Whopper Plopper is a straight retrieve bait that does very little to activate any internal rattles. Rattles are extra weight for the bait to carry over waves. I honestly don't think it matters though and couldn't tell you if I own any rattling or if they're all silent.

Get one of each.

I go with the rattle. There is a difference in weight between the two. I like the heavier lure for the areas I fish.

Hard to tell if it makes a difference because I use it when the wind picks up, but if I was going to own just one, it would be the rattler

Didn't know they made different ones? I have no idea which ones I own.

I would go with rattle.. I think it adds a little noise in he wind and adds some weight.. plus I think it gives a confidence boost

Don'think it really matters.

As everyone else here said, I don't think it matters. The spinning tail is what makes noise.

Until this post, i did not know there were rattling whopper ploppers.

honestly don't know which ones I own.

If you shake it more than 3 times you're playing with it.

I really don’t think it matters.

On tackle warehouse the only rattles they sell are 130s and a few colors in the 190 which is huge.

So I’m pretty sure most of mine are silent, although I have been throwing the 130 the most lately and having better success than the smaller versions.  I’m tempted to pick up a 190 but 7.5 inches is pretty big. Then again that’s also what I thought before I started throwing the 130 more often.
